Martin has six hits while Camacho fans 12 as Softball sweeps Mesa CC

(Mesa, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team (37-5, 25-5 in ACCAC) got back to ACCAC conference play on Saturday as it took two games at Mesa Community College (6-26, 4-24).

Freshman Jiselle Nunez (Tucson Magnet HS) was a flawless 4 for 4 on the day with two RBIs and three runs scored. Sophomore Talia Martin (Mountain View HS) was a strong presence at the plate going 6 for 9 with three RBIs and three runs while sophomore Natalya Rivera (Sunnyside HS) went 4 for 8 with four RBIs and two runs. Freshman Julissa Lopez (Tucson Magnet HS) finished the day 3 for 6 with three RBIs and a run. Sophomore Aubrey Marx (Cienega HS) was 2 for 7 with an RBI and four runs. Freshmen Sariah Ferrentino (Sabino HS) and Belen Camacho (Pueblo HS) got the wins in the circle.

Game 1: (11) Pima Aztecs 9, Mesa Thunderbirds 3

The Aztecs took the lead in the 1st inning and never relinquished as they won the first game.
Rivera hit a two-run RBI single with the bases loaded in the 1st inning to bring in Marx and Nunez. Lopez followed by driving in two runs as well, scoring sophomore Alyssa Noriega (Pueblo HS) and Rivera as Pima took a 4-0.

The Thunderbirds scored two runs in the bottom of the 5th inning, but the Aztecs halted the momentum by countering with two runs of their own in the top of the 6th inning. Noriega hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to plate Martin while Rivera hit another RBI single to drive in Marx to make it 8-2.

Rivera hit another RBI single in the 4th inning as she finished the game 3 for 4 with four RBIs and a run. Lopez closed out the game going 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Noriega hit an RBI single in the 2nd inning and went 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a run. Martin finished 4 for 5 with an RBI, two runs and three steals. Nunez was 1 for 1 with a run.

Ferrentino picked up the win as she pitched a complete-game, giving up three runs (three earned) on six hits with two strikeouts and no walks on 109 pitches.

Game 2: (11) Pima Aztecs 11, Mesa Thunderbirds 0 (5 innings)

The Aztecs scored all 11 runs in the 3rd inning as Camacho pitched a five-inning shutout.
The Aztecs hit for the cycle in the 3rd inning and scored all their runs with two outs in the inning.

Freshman Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View HS) hit a two-run RBI triple while Martin hit a two-run RBI single. Nunez capped off the inning with a two-run home run. Lopez and Camacho had back-to-back RBI singles while Marx had an RBI double. The Aztecs also took advantage of two errors by the Thunderbirds in the inning.

Nunez finished the game 3 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs while Figueroa went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run. Martin was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run and Marx closed it out going 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs. Lopez was 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run while Camacho went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run.

Camacho pitched all five innings, giving up two hits with 12 strikeouts and three walks on 94 pitches.

The Aztecs will be back on the road on Tuesday when they play an ACCAC conference doubleheader at Glendale Community College. First game starts at 12:00 p.m.
