(Irving, TX) On Tuesday, the Big 12 Conference announced lacrosse weekly awards, and Sun Devil Lacrosse had two on the receiving end as Katie Vahle and Anna Viglione were named Big 12 Goalkeeper and Midfielder of the Week, respectively. The pair led ASU to its first Big 12 Conference win over Cincinnati last weekend and kept the Sun Devils undefeated on home turf.
In two games last week, Vahle solidified herself in the program’s recordbooks. With 11 saves against Marquette, she took possession of the program’s all-time saves record, passing Berkeley Bonneau’s 576. She tacked on 13 more saves against Cincinnati in the win on Saturday, and now sits at 597 career saves– three shy of the 600 mark in her career.
Vahle continues to lead the Big 12 in saves (133) and save percentage (48%). Her defensive effort against Cincinnati allowed ASU to secure their first Big 12 Conference win, and remain one of 10 teams that is undefeated at home this season.
For the third time in her career, sophomore midfielder Anna Viglione was named Big 12 Midfielder of the Week after tallying 27 draw controls in two games last week, days after being named the IL Women Third Team All-American Draw Specialist.
Viglione had back-to-back games with 12+ draw controls, and sits at second in the NCAA with 135. She dominated in the fourth quarter against Cincinnati and won every draw in the frame to fuel ASU’s fourth-quarter comeback, and secure ASU’s first win this season when trailing entering the 4th quarter.
The midfielder is arguably the best in the Big 12, as no other player has recorded 12 or more draw controls in multiple games. Viglione has seven times.
In total, ASU has picked up nine weekly Big 12 honors this season. Viglione leads the team with three of those honors.
