Ganter hits walk-off homer, Casey, Oana and Castro combine for shutout as Baseball sweeps Mesa CC

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College baseball team (39-9, 23-9 in ACCAC) won its ninth straight game on Tuesday as dramatics took over in the first game and pitching ruled the second game.

Sophomore Nolan Ganter (Pinnacle HS) finished the day 3 for 7 with three RBIs and a run scored while freshman Zach Plasschaert closed out his day going 2 for 4 with four RBIs and a run. Freshman Jackson Glueck went 2 for 6 with an RBI and three runs while fellow freshman Sean Barta was 3 for 7 with two runs. Sophomores Tsubasa Tomii and Lucas Casey (Canyon del Oro HS) got the wins on the mound.

Game 1: (9) Pima Aztecs 6, Mesa Thunderbirds 5

The Aztecs rallied with four unanswered runs as Ganter hit a walk-off three-run homer in the 7th inning to cap off the comeback.

The Thunderbirds broke open a tie game with three runs in the top of the 6th inning to take a 5-2 advantage. The Aztecs got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Plasschaert hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to score Glueck, who hit a lead-off single. The Aztecs stranded two runners to end the inning.

Freshman Leon Cereceres and sophomore Caden Richards drew two straight walks to begin the 7th setting up Ganter’s game-winner.

Freshman Ernie Alvarez (Canyon del Oro HS) hit an RBI single to put Pima on the scoreboard in the 2nd inning, bringing in Barta. Plasschaert tied the game at 2-2 with his RBI single in the 4th inning, scoring Glueck.

Ganter finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run while Glueck went 2 for 3 with two runs. Plasschaert was 1 for 2 with two RBIs and Alvarez finished 1 for 3 with an RBI. Barta closed it out going 2 for 3 with a run.

Tomii picked up the win in relief as he pitched one and two-third innings, giving up one run (one earned) on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2: (9) Pima CC Aztecs 5, Mesa CC Thunderbirds 0: The Aztecs’ offense scored five runs off seven hits, but it was the pitching that dominated.

Casey picked up the win after throwing five innings, giving up three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. He was relieved by sophomore Taylin Oana, who pitched three hitless innings, with four strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Andres Castro (Pusch Ridge Christian HS) threw the 9th inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout.

Plasschaert put the Aztecs ahead in the 2nd inning with a two-run homer to right field, bringing in Glueck, who reached on an error to begin the inning.

Richards hit an RBI single in the 3rd inning and would later score to make it 4-0.
Sophomore Collin Senior (Horizon HS) finished the game 2 for 4 with an RBI single in the 6th inning. Plasschaert was 1 for 2 with two RBIs and a run. Richards went 1 for 4 with an RBI and run while Barta went 1 for 4 with a run. Glueck had an RBI and a run while sophomore Ray Jesse finished 1 for 3 with a run.

The Aztecs will play single games for the reminder of the regular season. They will play at Paradise Valley Community College on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
