(Milwaukee, WI)  Sun Devil Lacrosse (7-4) dug themselves out of an early hole but could not secure a solid lead in the 18-17 loss in overtime to Marquette (7-3) on Tuesday. The team had not seen a game go into overtime since April 3, 2022, when ASU took down No. 14 Rutgers 13-12 in overtime.

Despite the loss, senior goalie Katie Vahle tallied 11 saves, which was more than enough to claim the program’s all-time saves record. She surpassed Berkeley Bonneau who recorded 576 saves in her Sun Devil Career. Vahle has 583.

How it Happened

After Izzi Hammond had ASU on the board in their first possession, Marquette notched four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead. ASU then ended the frame scoring two of the last three goals to face a 5-4 deficit after one.

The Sun Devils came out swinging in the second, scoring the first three goals of the frame and taking a two goal lead– their largest lead of the afternoon. Marquette was quick to strike back and netted three of the next four goals to tie the game 8-8. ASU then outscored MU 3-2 to close out the quarter and held an 11-10 lead at the half.

It was all Marquette in the third quarter, as ASU got just three shots off in the frame and did not score on a single one. MU on the other hand tallied five goals to cling onto a 15-11 lead.

ASU struck back with five goals in the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter before Marquette got on the board in the frame with seven minutes remaining, tying the game 16-16. Teagan Ng scored a man up goal with 4:30 remaining, but ASU could not close out the quarter, as MU netted a goal with less than a minute to go, eventually sending the game to overtime.

In overtime, an ASU charge call on the first possession of the period gave Marquette the ball, and after two shots in their offensive zone, their third shot went in to clinch the 18-17 win.
