Taylor is the second Sun Devil to win a weekly honor this year
(Tempe, AZ) Freshman Lily Taylor has been named Women’s Tennis Big 12 Player of the Week as announced by the conference Tuesday afternoon after helping the Sun Devils remain unbeaten at home and move to 5-1 in Big 12 play.
It marks the first career honor for Taylor and the second weekly honor by the team this season. On Feb. 4 Sara Svetac was named player of the week after clinching two points in the win over then-No. 15 Pepperdine.
The Australian continued her success in conference play going 2-0 in singles matches and 2-0 in doubles matches helping the Sun Devils garner wins over West Virginia and Cincinnati.
In double’s she notched two wins with Patricija Spaka as her partner to move to 10-1 this spring. The duo is currently ranked No. 36 in the country in the latest ITA poll. The pair has won ten of the last 11 matches this spring.
The duo clinched the doubles point by winning 6-3 over Mille Haagensen & Julie Bousseau on Friday against the Mountaineers and won 6-1 over Rozalia Gruszczynska & Gabrielle Guenther on Sunday.
In singles play, she is tied with teammate Emilija Tverijonaite by boasting a 4-1 record in conference play. Taylor has a four-match winning streak and dropped only eight games all weekend.
The freshman clinched the match against Cincinnati with a straight sets 6-4, 6-3 win over Milica Popovski and cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Michaela Kucharova of West Virginia.
Sun Devil Women’s Tennis heads to Oklahoma State and Kansas State this week starting with a showdown against the defending Big 12 champions in Stillwater, Okla. at 3 p.m. AZT. Then on Sunday, the team will compete against the Wildcats in Manhattan, KS at 12 p.m. AZT.
