Lacrosse Cruises Past Bears, Remains Undefeated at Home

TEMPE – Sun Devil Lacrosse (5-2) handled business against Mercer (1-4) at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium, winning 16-10 on Tuesday afternoon. Attackers Teagan Ng and Anna Thornton each netted hat tricks for ASU, leading the team to a 3-0 start at home this season.

The NCAA’s assist leader, Jordyn Behar, continued to create opportunities for her teammates after tallying five more today, marking her 4th game this season with 5+ assists. 

How it Happened

The Sun Devils got off to a hot start scoring the first four goals of the contest. Addie Shevitz found the back of the net to open the game before ASU exploded for three more goals in under two minutes. Mercer took one back before the break to make it 4-1 after the first.

The second quarter was back-and-forth with nine total goals shared between the two teams. Izzi Hammondand Teagan Ng each scored twice as Arizona State extended their lead to 9-5.

ASU picked up right where they left off in the second half scoring four more goals and extending the lead to 13-7 heading into the fourth quarter. After providing four assists in the first half, Jordyn Behar tacked on one more of her own on a slick spin move behind the net before slotting a shot into the top right corner. Anna Thorton scored the final goal of the quarter with 13 seconds left to give the Sun Devils their largest lead of the game, up 6.

The Sun Devils held firm to their lead to close out the fourth quarter. Thornton and Claire Beucher scored early giving ASU a comfortable eight-goal lead, and both backup goalies saw time in net in the final frame. A last-second goal was scored for Mercer, but the 16-10 score stood final.

  • For the second straight season, ASU has posted a 3-0 record in their first three home games.
  • Junior attacker Lydia Oldknow extended her point-scoring streak to 26 games, dating back to the 2024 season opener, after an assist in today’s contest.
  • Junior attacker Jordyn Behar extended her NCAA assist lead with five more against Mercer today.
  • Senior attacker Anna Thornton recorded her first hat trick of the season after recording five in 2024.
  • With three goals and one assist against the Bears, junior attacker Teagan Ng is five points shy of the 100 mark in her career. She will be the eighth Sun Devil all-time to reach this feat.
  • After securing nine saves today, Senior goalie Katie Vahle is 23 saves away from tying the program’s all time record of 576 set by Berkeley Bonneau.
