Julissa Lopez has four hits and seven RBIs, Flores picks up two wins as Softball’s rally secures sweep over Scottsdale College

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team (31-1, 21-1 in ACCAC) won its 12th straight game on Tuesday in thrilling fashion as it played an ACCAC conference doubleheader against Scottsdale Community College (14-9, 9-9) at the West Campus Aztec Field.

Freshman Julissa Lopez (Tucson Magnet HS) finished the day going 4 for 6 with seven RBIs and three runs scored. Sophomore Alyssa Noriega (Pueblo HS) closed out the doubleheader 4 for 8 with four RBIs and one run while freshman Jiselle Nunez (Tucson Magnet HS) was also 4 for 8 with four RBIs and three runs. Sophomore Aubrey Marx (Cienega HS) went 5 for 8 with two RBIs and three runs and fellow sophomore Talia Martin (Mountain View HS) finished 4 for 7 with five runs. Freshman Arianna Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) picked up two wins in the circle.

Game 1: (4) Pima Aztecs 12, Scottsdale Artichokes 0 (5 innings)

The Aztecs scored four runs in each the 1st, 2nd and 3rd inning frames to earn the run rule win.

The Aztecs had the bases juiced with two outs in the 1st inning as Lopez hit a grand slam to right field, scoring Nunez, Noriega and sophomore Natalya Rivera (Sunnyside HS).

Sophomore Cheyanne Ortiz (Tucson Magnet HS) hit a two-run RBI single in the 2nd inning to score Nunez and Rivera to make it 8-0. Nunez and Noriega had RBI hits earlier in the inning.

Lopez continued her dominance at the plate as she drove a two-run RBI double bringing around Marx and Nunez to cap off Pima’s scoring. Nunez hit an RBI single, and Noriega had a sacrifice-fly RBI earlier in the inning.

Lopez closed out the game going 2 for 3 with six RBIs and a run while Nunez went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs. Noriega was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run. Martin and Marx combined to go 4 for 7 at the top of the order with four runs scored. Ortiz finished 1 for 2 with two RBIs.

Flores picked up the win as she pitched all five innings, giving up one hit with seven strikeouts and no walks on 75 pitches.

Game 2: (4) Pima Aztecs 9, Scottsdale Artichokes 8

The Aztecs rallied off six unanswered runs; five in the bottom of the 7th inning to win it and complete the sweep.

The Aztecs trailed 8-4 heading into the 7th inning. Lopez and Ortiz got the inning started with back-to-back singles. Freshman Amerika Lopez-Bedoy (Sunnyside HS) hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to score Lopez. Freshman Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View HS) and Martin had two straight walks to load the bases. Marx stepped in and hit a two-run RBI double to plate pinch runner Uriah Burrell (Catalina Foothills HS) and Figueroa to cut the deficit to 8-7. With two outs in the inning, Noriega hit a walk-off two-run RBI single to drive in Martin and Marx.

Lopez hit an RBI double in the 2nd inning and finished the game 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs. Nunez and Noriega each went 2 for 5 with two RBIs. Marx was 3 for 5 with two RBIs and a run while Martin finished 2 for 3 with three runs and two walks.

Flores pitched in relief and picked up her second win of the day. She threw two and one-third innings with three strikeouts and one walk.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Field on Saturday when they host Chandler-Gilbert Community College. First game starts at noon.
