(Mesa, AZ) The Pima Community College baseball team (28-8, 14-8 in ACCAC) earned an ACCAC conference doubleheader sweep on Tuesday as it played GateWay Community College (7-20, 3-19).
Freshman Leon Cereceres closed out the day going 3 for 6 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman Zach Plasschaert went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, two runs and three walks while freshman Ramon Martinez was 1 for 3 with two RBIs, two runs and four walks. Sophomore Ray Jesse had an RBI and three runs for the day. Sophomore Tsubasa Tomii picked up the win in relief and sophomore Lucas Casey (Canyon del Oro HS) threw a shutout in a winning effort.
Game 1: (15) Pima Aztecs 6, GateWay Geckos 5
The Aztecs were forced to rally twice but scored two runs in the top of the 7th inning to complete the comeback.
Down 5-4 in the 7th inning, sophomore Nolan Ganter (Pinnacle HS) hit a leadoff single. Freshman Quintin Hennesy (Horizon HS) came on as a pinch runner and scored on an error to tie the game at 5-5. Sophomore Collin Senior (Horizon HS) and freshman Sean Barta hit back-to-back singles and Plasschaert loaded the bases with a walk. Martinez hit into a 5-4 groundout but it scored pinch runner Brian Brimmer (Sahuarita HS) to give Pima the lead for good.
Tomii got two strikeouts and left the tying run stranded on third base to finish off the game.
The Aztecs trailed 4-0 heading into the 3rd inning. Freshman Jackson Glueck hit an RBI single to put them on the board. Cereceres hit a sacrifice-fly RBI in the 4th inning and Jesse took advantage of some miscues and scored on an error to put the score at 4-3. The Aztecs tied it up in the 5th inning when Plasschaert hit an RBI single to score Glueck.
Glueck finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run while Cereceres went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run. Plasschaert was 1 for 3 with an RBI and Martinez finished 0 for 2 with an RBI, a run and two walks.
Tomii pitched the final two and one-third innings, giving up two hits with two strikeouts and one walk on 36 pitches.

Game 2: (15) Pima Aztecs 10, GateWay Geckos 0 (5 innings)
Casey pitched all five innings, giving up four hits with eight strikeouts and three walks on 86 pitches.
The Aztecs took a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning but poured it on with four runs in each the 4th and 5th innings.
Sophomore Caden Richards hit a two-run RBI single in the 4th inning to drive in Martinez and Jesse as they went up 6-0.
Cereceres contributed with a two-run RBI triple in the 5th inning to score Plasschaert and Jesse. Richards followed with an RBI single to plate Cereceres.
Richards closed out the game going 2 for 4 with three RBIs while Cereceres went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run. Plasschaert and Barta each finished 1 for 1 with an RBI and two runs. Martinez went 1 for 1 with an RBI, a run and two walks. Jesse had an RBI and two runs for the game.
