(Phoenix, AZ) The Park University Gilbert softball team (4-2, 0-0) earned its first doubleheader sweep of the 2025 regular season against the Nelson University Arizona Warriors (3-11, 0-0), Friday afternoon at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix, Ariz.
After these two teams split their first doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 7, on Park-Gilbert’s opening day, the Buccaneers put a combined 15 runs on the board en route to a pair of wins.
Game 1: Park-Gilbert 5, Nelson 2
After a quiet first three innings, the Bucs rallied in the second half of the opening game to secure the first win of the day.
Nelson hung onto a 1-0 lead until the Bucs rattled off three hits and scored three runs in the fourth inning. Samara Romero singled to right field, bringing home third baseman Ileana Rivera. Shortly after, with the bases loaded, shortstop Kayla Seto was walked as Alejandra Castro advanced home. At the next at-bat, first baseman Noelle Gumm’s base hit led to Park’s third RBI of the inning.
Park put up another three-hit inning in the top of the seventh to seal the 5-2 victory. With runners on second and third base, Rivera’s ground out to shortstop led to Seto advancing home from third. Two at-bats later, Castro’s single to right center brought Gumm home.
Pitcher Elisa Garcia earned her first win of the young season as she pitched all seven innings. Garcia threw 114 pitches, striking out two batters.
Park-Gilbert totaled eight hits compared to Nelson’s seven and recorded three errors to Nelson’s one.
Game 2: Park-Gilbert 10, Nelson 2
Unlike the first game of this doubleheader, Park-Gilbert started hot and never took their foot off the gas. The Buccaneer bats cruised with 10 hits and 10 unanswered runs in the first 4.5 innings of this five-inning bout.
The top of the first saw the Bucs jump out to a 3-0 lead. Rivera doubled to centerfield, bringing home center fielder Ledezma Romero for the first run of the game. Rivera then reached home on a throwing error in Nelson’s infield. Shortly after, catcher Bri Jackson earned her second RBI of the season with a single to center field.
In the top of the third inning, second baseman Carolina Olivias earned her second RBI of the game.
Rivera recorded her second of five RBIs in game two in the fourth inning, as she reached on a fielder’s choice bringing Seto home. In the next at-bat, Castro reached first on a Nelson fielding error as Romero rounded the bases for the second time in this contest, extending the Bucs’ lead to 6-0.
Park-Gilbert closed the day off strong, putting four additional runs on the board in the fifth and final inning. Gumm singled through the right side for her first RBI of this game and second of the day.
Rivera then put the Bucs up 10-0 with a three-run home run, her fourth homer of the 2025 season.
Samara Romero got her third win on the mound this season, pitching all five innings and allowing just two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
The Bucs had no errors and 10 hits in Game 2. The Warriors had six hits and four errors.

The Park-Gilbert softball team, winners of three straight, resume play next Friday when they head to Tuscon, Ariz., to compete in the Tuscon Invitational. The Bucs will take on Concordia College and Bellevue University on March 7, as the games are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. MST respectively.
