(Tucson, AZ) The Park University Gilbert softball team (5-4, 0-0) cruised to a 13-4 victory over the Dickinson State University Bluehawks (10-6, 0-0) in the Tucson Invitational, Sunday afternoon at Lincoln Park.
The run rule came into effect after the sixth inning, as the Buccaneers set a new season-high for hits with 17. Park-Gilbert also set new season highs in RBIs and doubles, with 12 and four respectively.
Samara Romero got the start on the mound for the Bucs as she struck out five batters in five innings, totaling 81 pitches. Romero also tripled in her first at-bat and drove home two runs in the top of the first inning, totaling three hits for the day on the offensive end.
The first inning saw the Bucs put four early runs on the board. Along with Romero’s two RBIs, catcher Lina Sanchez and second baseman Carolina Olivias hit singles to bring the other two runs home.
The top of the fifth also saw Park-Gilbert score four runs. A single to center field from right fielder Sorcha Walkerset up Romero to reach home plate from third base. Two at-bats later, first baseman Noelle Gumm singled to bring Walker home. An error following Ledezma Romero’s single converted into an RBI for the senior outfielder. Third baseman Ileana Rivera, who went 3-3 on the day, singled to center field to bring Lezedma home.
The Buccaneers kept the momentum rolling into the sixth inning, as they tacked on another five runs and three hits. A wild pitch brought third base runner Samara Romero home, while both Rivera and Alejandra Castro drove home a pair of runs with their respective singles that inning.
Overall, Park-Gilbert totaled 13 runs, 17 hits, and two errors. Dickinson State had four runs, eight hits, and two errors.
