Aztecs Track & Field sets four new Outdoor qualifiers at Mesa Multi’s Meet and Cody McBride Invitational

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s and women’s track & field teams had a busy weekend competing at the Distance in the Dark, Mesa Multi’s and the Cody McBride Invitational this weekend in Phoenix.

The Aztecs came away with a total of four new NJCAA Outdoor national qualifying marks/times.

Freshmen Charles Borowsky and Martin Valencia-Felix (St. Augustine Catholic HS) took the top two spots in the Javelin throw. Borowsky took first place and set his national qualifier at 59.56 meters (195-feet, 5-inches). He is now No. 3 in Pima school history.

Valencia-Felix improved on his national qualifier set last week. He finished in second place with a mark of 57.14 meters (187-5). His best throw last week was 53.84 meters (176-1).

Freshman Taylor Brown took first place in the 400 meters as he finished with a time of 47.45, which improved on his national qualifier previously set at 48.06. He sits at No. 5 in Pima school history.

Freshman Jake Applegate also improved his national qualifier in the 400-meter hurdles as he took second place with a time of 52.73. His previous time was at 54.27 seconds. He is No. 5 for the event in Pima school history.

In women’s competition, the Heptathlon trio of freshman Hannah Droeg (Casteel HS), sophomore Maylee Thompson (Willcox HS) and freshman Layla Konski (Ironwood Ridge HS) all earned national qualifiers. Droeg took second place with 4258 points (putting her at No. 5 in Pima school history). Thompson finished in third place with 4239 points (putting her at No. 8 in school history). Konski placed fourth with 3729 points.

The Aztecs will compete in the Triton Invitational on Friday and Saturday, April 4-5 at the University of California San Diego in La Jolla, CA.
