Aztecs Men’s Basketball completes flawless regular season at 30-0 after beating Scottsdale CC

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (30-0, 18-0 in ACCAC) closed out the regular season on Saturday as it hosted Scottsdale Community College (10-18, 7-11).

The No. 1 ranked Aztecs defeated the Artichokes 122-57 completing the program’s first undefeated regular season and undefeated ACCAC conference schedule.

The Aztecs dominated from the start as they opened a 26-4 lead in the first 7:29 of the game. They hit seven of their first 10 shots. Pima held the Artichokes to 18 points, which is the second-lowest point total in a half the Aztecs have surrendered this season. The lowest was 16 points to South Mountain Community College on Feb. 15.

The Aztecs continued to pour it on as they started the second half on an 18-2 run to make it 82-20 in the first four and a half minutes. The Aztecs led by as much as 71 points and outscored Scottsdale 58-39 in the second half.

Sophomore Cohenj Gonzales (Mesquite HS) finished with a game-high 19 points as he went 3 for 6 from three-point range.

Sophomore Kota Benson (Mesa HS) scored 14 points on 5 for 7 shooting and 3 for 3 from downtown as he added seven rebounds and five assists.

Sophomore Max Majerle (Arcadia HS) also went 5 for 7 from the field with 12 points. He also had six assists, three rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Freshman Brock Mendoza scored 12 points off the bench on 4 for 6 shooting. He also posted three rebounds and two blocks.

Sophomores Wes Ball (Marana HS) and Gabe Oldham each contributed with 10 points.

Freshmen Isaac Johnson, Aidan Schmidt (Casteel HS), Cooper Jones(Buena HS) and Brigg Wolfe (Mesa Mountain View HS) all scored eight points off the bench.

The Aztecs shot 64 percent from the field (45 for 70) and 50 percent from beyond the arc (16 for 32).

The No. 1 seeded Aztecs will host No. 4 South Mountain Community College in the Region I, Division II Tournament Semifinals on Wednesday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
