Vital scores 18 points, Sours-Miller’s double-double helps Women’s Basketball upset No. 3 Mesa CC

(Mesa, AZ). The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (23-5, 14-3 in ACCAC picked up a big road win that could have potential implications on the final ACCAC Division II standings and Region I, Division II Tournament seeding.

The No. 11 ranked Aztecs defeated No. 3 Mesa Community College 66-55 on Saturday handing the Thunderbirds their first ACCAC conference loss of the season (22-7, 16-1). The Aztecs had dropped their previous two meetings to the Thunderbirds this season falling 74-57 on Dec. 11 and 63-59 on Jan. 29.

The Aztecs led 35-32 at halftime and went on to outscore Mesa 19-12 in the third quarter.

Sophomore Mattanaya Vital (Amphitheater HS) finished with a game-high 18 points as she went 7 for 13 from the field and 4 for 8 from beyond the arc.

Freshman Kiley Sours-Miller gained her 13th double-double of the season as she posted 14 points and 12 rebounds. She went 7 for 8 from the field.

Freshman Melicia Nelson (Window Rock HS) added 12 points and seven assists while freshman Kennedi Niemann was the fourth Pima player to score in double figures with 10 points on 4 for 8 shooting.

Sophomore Rori Hoffmeyer was also a force on the glass and on defense as she had seven points, 12 rebounds to go with four blocks, three assists and three steals.

The Aztecs have a one-and-a half game lead on Scottsdale Community College for the No. 2 seed and will close out the regular season against the Artichokes next Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
