Sours-Miller and Nelson each post double-doubles as Women’s Basketball outduels Glendale CC in second half

(Glendale, AZ)  The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (22-5, 13-3 in ACCAC) won its fifth straight game on Wednesday as it played at Glendale Community College (8-15, 6-9) in an ACCAC conference matchup.

The No. 11 ranked Aztecs dominated the second half in their 66-46 win over the Gauchos. The Aztecs won all three regular season meetings with Glendale by a 19.6 win margin. Pima got the 67-47 win on Dec. 7 at Glendale CC and 59-40 victory on Jan. 25 at Aztecs Gym.

Leading 28-26 at halftime, the Aztecs got back-to-back three-pointers from sophomore Mattanaya Vital (Amphitheater HS) and freshman Melicia Nelson (Window Rock HS) to open the third quarter. Up 41-35, the Aztecs scored the final eight points of the quarter to go up by double digits at 49-35.

The momentum carried over into the fourth quarter as they built it into a 23-2 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 64-37. The Gauchos were held without a field goal for a little over 12 minutes; from the 4:33 mark in the third quarter to the 2:21 mark in the fourth.

The Aztecs fell behind early at 9-1 but outscored the Gauchos 17-5 in the final 5:57 seconds as Nelson scored as time expired to make it 18-14.

Freshman Kiley Sours-Miller finished the game with 19 points and 14 rebounds (eight offensive) securing her 12th double-double of the season. She also added three blocks and three steals.

Nelson also produced a double-double as she scored 11 points to go with 11 rebounds and six assists.

Freshman Kennedi Niemann posted nine points and six rebounds while Vital contributed with six points, three rebounds and two assists. Freshman Sofia Cambridge (Page HS) had six points off the bench.

The Aztecs will be back on the road on Saturday as they play at No. 3 ranked Mesa Community College at 2:00 p.m. The Aztecs dropped their first two meetings to the Thunderbirds this season; falling 74-57 on Dec. 11 in Mesa and again 63-59 on Jan. 29 at the West Campus Aztec Gym.
