(Mesa, AZ) The proverbial money is off their backs. The Park University Gilbert men’s volleyball team snapped its 30-game losing streak with a straight sets win over Soka University of America 3-0 (25-13, 25-8, 25-12).
The win snapped a losing streak which dated back to the 2023 season. The last win for the Bucs prior to tonight was a 3-0 win against Viterbo on March 13. The Bucs also accomplished something tonight they had not done before in their history. Win a set holding the opponent to less than 10 points.
The Bucs also put their names in the Park Gilbert record book in a number of team and individual categories. The Bucs tied the record for aces in a match with 14 which last occurred in the 2021 season against Pacific Union. Their attack percentage (.373) is fourth best all-time. Jonah Baich posted the second best individual hitting percentage in school history at .833 (5-0-6). The Bucs also allowed the fewest number of kills in a match with nine.
Azzlyn Potts led the team with eight kills, hitting .429. Dominic Smith followed with seven putaways and a .353 percentage, while Christian Brooks, who made his debut tonight in a Bucs uniform made it a good one with six kills and hitting .500.
Jake Burdick returned to the lineup after not playing in the last five games and posted 25 assists. He also tied for the team lead in sigs with six.
Four Buccaneers had double digit aces led by Potts and Burdick with three each. Park also forced 13 attack errors from the Lions and the Lions had 10 service errors.
The Bucs now take a month off as they don’t return to action until March 5 when they host Morningside University at 6 p.m. at Arizona Athletic Grounds. The Bucs have not met Morningside since its inaugural year. The Bucs won that matchup 3-0.
