Max Majerle and Wes Ball each net 21 points as No. 2 Men’s Basketball upends Glendale College for 28th straight win

(Glendale, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (28-0, 16-0 in ACCAC) went back on the road on Wednesday for an ACCAC conference match at Glendale Community College (16-9, 8-7) in a game between two potential Region I, Division II Playoff opponents.

The No. 2 ranked Aztecs pulled away with a double digit run almost halfway through the second half and beat the Gauchos 91-67 for their 28th straight victory. The teams came into the game as the top two in the ACCAC Division II standings.

The Aztecs beat the Gauchos in their first meeting 86-80 on Dec. 7 in Glendale and again 91-68 at the Aztecs Gym on Jan. 25.

The Aztecs built a 37-20 lead in the first half, but the Gauchos scored five straight field goals all beyond the arc and closed the half on a 15-6 run as Pima led 43-35 at the break.

The Aztecs’ lead was cut to single digits again at 51-42 but it was the final time as they put together an 18-2 run in 4:23 to gain their biggest advantage at that point at 69-44. Glendale scored the next eight points to make it 69-52 but would not get any closer. The Aztecs led by as much as 29 points after sophomore Cohenj Gonzales’ (Mesquite HS) three-pointer put the score at 87-58 with under four minutes left.

Sophomores Max Majerle (Arcadia HS) and Wes Ball (Marana HS) each scored a team-high 21 points. Majerle was 8 for 14 from the field with five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Ball was 5 for 6 shooting and 10 for 11 from the free throw line. He had five rebounds and two steals.

Sophomore Gabe Oldham fell short of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds as he added five assists. He went 4 for 7 from the floor.

Gonzales scored eight straight down the stretch in the second half as he finished with 11 points. He sits at 992 career points at Pima. He also had five assists and four rebounds in the game.

Sophomore Kota Benson (Mesa HS) contributed with nine points, eight rebounds and five assists.

The Aztecs will be back on the road on Saturday as they play at Mesa Community College. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
