(Scottsdale, AZ)  The Park University Gilbert baseball team scored five runs in the first three innings and used “Johnny Wholestaff” to shut down Nelson University over the final seven innings to win 6-2 Tuesday evening at Indian School Park.

The baseball fields at Indian School Park were Park Gilbert’s home in 2021 during covid but only two members of the 2025 squad played that season (Diego Bejarano, Adrian Gamez).

Parked jumped on top in the first scoring two runs within the first three batters. Caleb Rozier (single) and Joel Holguin (double) had the RBI knocks.

Nelson got two on Park starter Isaiah Csader in the second with two outs. But Park responded in the top of the third with three runs to take the lead for good. A walk and a single started things with one out. Gino Caperon, who leads the team in RBI singled home Holguin who had walked and with the bases loaded right fielder Enrique Figueroa singled to score two more.

After the second inning, Park Gilbert head coach Kelly Stinnett sent out “Johnny Wholestaff,” one pitcher in each inning from the third through the ninth and they kept the Warriors off the scoreboard.

While Nelson did not score over the last seven innings, they did have a runner(s) on in every inning except the eighth and ninth.

Because of the way the bullpen was used and with the starter only going two innings, the most effective pitcher is given the win and in this case it was given to Sunny Patel (2-0) who picks up his second win in relief in five days. Patel got the win against Eastern Oregon on last Thursday night with two scoreless innings of relief.

Each team had seven hits; Holguin had the only multi-hit game for the Bucs.

The Bucs now hit the road for real as they travel to Fort Worth, Texas for a two day four-game series with Texas Wesleyan. The Bucs dropped a double header to the Rams last year. The double headers will be on Friday, February 14 and Saturday February 15 with first pitch in the first game each day set for 1 p.m. Arizona time.
