(Chandler, AZ) The Park University Gilbert men’s basketball team (6-19, 3-10) lost to the Benedictine University Mesa Redhawks (13-14, 2-11) by a score of 76-75, Saturday afternoon at Chandler-Gilbert Community College.
The Buccaneers dropped their final home game of the 2024-2025 season, as. a contested layup from guard Mahlik Lindsey rimmed out at the buzzer.
Unlike the previous meeting between these two conference foes, this matchup was competitive from start to finish as both teams traded scoring runs throughout the day. Neither team held a lead larger than seven points.
The Bucs were led by an incredible 25-point outing from forward Tyson Banks. The sophomore from Bullhead City, Ariz., came off the bench and kept the Bucs alive in the second half with 16 points in the final 20 minutes of play. Banks capped off his career-high scoring performance with a three-pointer to take a one-point lead with 24 seconds remaining. Tyson also recorded 11 rebounds to mark his first double-double of the season.
Guard Tanner Pate scored 14 points and seven rebounds, playing all but two minutes. Guard Latrell Jones played 30 minutes off the bench, scoring 10 points and pulling down six boards.
The Buccaneers shot a total of 45.2% from the field and 25% from downtown. BENU shot 42.9% from the field and 35.3% from beyond the arc.
Despite the loss, Park-Gilbert was proud to honor its three seniors and their contributions to Buccaneers basketball.
Aidan Moreno transferred to Park in 2022 as a sophomore and has been an integral piece to this program ever since. The senior from Rio Rancho, N.M., has eclipsed the 500-point mark and is three rebounds shy of 400.
Senior Marquis Mckinzy, an LA native who transferred from the College of the Desert, made his Park-Gilbert debut in his junior year and provided an immediate presence on both ends of the floor. In 2024-2025, Mckinzy started 15 games and scored 136 points. His senior campaign was highlighted by a buzzer-beating, game-tying three-pointer sending Park into overtime, in the team’s Jan. 9 win over Life Pacific.
Hunter Robbins also transferred to Park University Gilbert for his junior season. The 6-7 power forward from Mesa, Ariz., and Phoenix College, made the most of his minutes as an effective and consistent paint presence.
The Buccaneers men’s basketball team gears up for one last game in the 2024-2025 season, when they head to Surprise, Ariz., to face the Ottawa University Arizona Spirit (9-18,2-11) this Thursday, Feb. 20, at 7:30 p.m. MST.
