Aztecs Women’s Basketball uses 15-1 run in third quarter to build lead, holds off late rally to beat Chandler-Gilbert CC

(Chandler, AZ)  The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (19-5, 11-3 in ACCAC) was back on the road on Wednesday for an ACCAC conference matchup at Chandler-Gilbert Community College (6-17, 2-12).

After a closely contested first half, the No. 12 ranked Aztecs made a third quarter run to take the lead and halt a final scoring surge in the fourth quarter to beat the Coyotes 56-45. The Aztecs won all three regular season meetings with Chandler-Gilbert as they took the first game 64-41 on the road on Nov. 23 and won the second game 68-50 at the West Campus Aztec Gym on Jan. 18.

The Aztecs trailed 23-21 but freshman Kennedi Niemann’s three-pointer sparked and capped a 15-1 run in the next six and a half minutes as they took a 36-24 lead. Pima held Chandler-Gilbert without a field goal for the first 7:16 of the third quarter. The Aztecs outscored the Coyotes 21-7 and led 42-30 entering the final frame.

The Coyotes scored six straight points and cut Pima’s lead to 46-42 with 4:04 remaining in the game but sophomore Rori Hoffmeyer (Cibola HS) scored on back-to-back possessions with freshman Kiley Sours-Miller providing the assists. Hoffmeyer scored her third straight bucket to get Pima’s lead back to double digits and Sours-Miller capped an 8-0 run with her basket to make it 54-42. Sours-Miller, Hoffmeyer and Niemann scored all of Pima’s points in the fourth quarter.

Sours-Miller finished with 20 points and 18 rebounds; including nine offensive rebounds, for her 11th double-double of the season.

Hoffmeyer scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half as she went 7 for 9 from the field. She also had six rebounds and three blocks.Niemann scored all nine of her points in the second half to go along with five rebounds and three assists.

Freshman Lucy Land went 4 for 5 from the field and scored eight points off the bench.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Saturday when they host South Mountain Community College. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
