Aztecs Softball sweeps Chandler-Gilbert CC to move to 16-0

(Chandler, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team (16-0, 12-0 in ACCAC) continued its stellar start to the season as it played an ACCAC conference doubleheader on Tuesday at Chandler-Gilbert Community College (2-10, 2-6).

The Aztecs scored 23 runs on the day as they hit a collective 10 doubles. Freshman Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View HS) finished the day 3 for 7 with five RBIs and a run scored. Freshman Amerika Lopez-Bedoy (Sunnyside HS) went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored while Julissa Lopez (Tucson Magnet HS) was 3 for 6 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Sophomore Aubrey Marx (Cienega HS) closed out her day going 3 for 6 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman Arianna Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) and sophomore Jessica Thompson (Tanque Verde HS) got the wins in the circle.

Game 1: (15) Pima Aztecs 11, Chandler-Gilbert Coyotes 0 (6 innings)

The Aztecs took control scoring 10 runs in the final three innings to earn their first run-rule victory of the day.

The Aztecs scored five runs in the 4th inning. Lopez-Bedoy hit an RBI double to drive in Lopez and would later score on an error to make it 3-0. Marx hit a two-run RBI double to bring around sophomore Cheyanne Ortiz (Tucson Magnet HS) and Figueroa to make it 5-0. Sophomore Talia Martin (Mountain View HS) scored the final run in the frame off a fielder’s choice play as Pima went up 6-0.

Figueroa hit an RBI single in the 5th inning to bring in pinch runner Taiya Teixeira (Salpointe Catholic HS). The duo wasn’t finished as Figueroa hit a two-run RBI double as part of the 6th inning scoring Lopez and Teixeira again. Freshman Belen Camacho (Pueblo HS) and Lopez each had RBI hits as part of the four-run 6th inning.

Figueroa finished the game 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored while Lopez-Bedoy went 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run. Lopez was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs. Marx closed it out going 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Freshman Jiselle Nunez (Tucson Magnet HS) had an RBI single in the 1st inning and finished 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Flores picked up her seventh win of the season (7-0) as she pitched all six innings, giving up two hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks.

Game 2: (15) Pima Aztecs 12, Chandler-Gilbert Coyotes 3 (5 innings)

The Aztecs scored 11 runs in the first three innings as they completed the sweep with a second run-rule win.

The Aztecs put up six runs in the 1st inning frame. Sophomore Natalya Rivera (Sunnyside HS) hit an RBI triple to drive in Martin, who drew a lead-off walk. Rivera would later score on an error. Lopez and Lopez-Bedoy had back-to-back RBI hits. Figueroa picked up where she left off in the first game as she capped off the inning with a two-run RBI double to plate Lopez-Bedoy and Ortiz to make it 6-0.

The offense was right back at it in the 2nd inning with three straight singles. Sophomore Alyssa Noriega’s (Pueblo HS) RBI single scored Marx. Lopez hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to bring in Rivera to make it 8-0. Lopez-Bedoy capped it off with an RBI double to bring around pinch runner Amber Conner (Tanque Verde HS) as Pima took a 9-0 lead.

The Aztecs made it a double-digit margin in the 3rd inning with another two runs. Sophomore Nevaeh Bracamonte and Ortiz had back-to-back bases loaded walks to score Marx and Conner respectively and make it 11-0.

Lopez-Bedoy finished the game 2 for 2 with two RBIs and a run scored while Rivera went 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs. Marx was 2 for 3 with two runs and Lopez finished 1 for 2 with two RBIs and a run scored. Figueroa closed out the game going 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Noriega and Ortiz each were 1 for 2 with an RBI, a run and two walks.

Thompson contributed on offense with an RBI double in the 5th inning but also got the win in the circle (3-0) as she pitched four innings, giving up two runs (two earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

The Aztecs will step away from ACCAC conference play on Saturday when they host Eastern Arizona College in a non-conference doubleheader at the West Campus Aztec Softball Field. First game starts at 12:00 p.m.
