(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College softball team (12-0, 8-0 in ACCAC) faced a tough test on Tuesday as it faced off against South Mountain Community College (6-7, 3-3) at the West Campus Aztec Field.
Freshman Jiselle Nunez (Tucson Magnet HS) finished the day 4 for 8 with six RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore Natalya Rivera (Sunnyside HS) helped sparked both rallies as she closed out the day going 5 for 7 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore Cheyanne Ortiz (Tucson Magnet HS) was 3 for 6 with two RBIs and a run while freshman Yulissa Lopez (Tucson Magnet HS) went 2 for 8 with three RBIs. Freshmen Arianna Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) and Belen Camacho (Pueblo HS) pitched complete-games and got the wins in the circle.
Game 1: (15) Pima Aztecs 7, (25) South Mountain Cougars 6
W – Flores (5-0). 2B: Marx, Ortiz, Lopez, Rivera. HR: Nunez.
The Aztecs trailed 5-2 and 6-5 but rallied in the 6th inning to secure the win.
Down 6-5 in the bottom of the 6th inning, the Aztecs got a single from Nunez and a walk from sophomore Alyssa Noriega (Pueblo HS) with one out. The Aztecs had two outs when Lopez hit a two-run RBI double to right field to drive in Nunez and Noriega to put Pima up for good.
The Aztecs trailed 5-2 in the 5th inning. With the bases load, Ortiz knocked a two-run RBI double to center field bringing around pinch runner Nevaeh Bracamonte and Rivera. Sophomore Jessica Thompson (Tanque Verde HS) hit a groundout to score sophomore Mari Asher (Canyon del Oro HS) from third base to tie the game at 5-5.
Nunez tied it up at 2-2 in the 1st inning when she drove a two-run home run to right field to score sophomore Aubrey Marx (Cienega HS).
Nunez finished the game 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Rivera went 2 for 3 with a run while Marx was 2 for 4 with a run. Lopez closed it out going 1 for 4 with two RBIs and Ortiz went 1 for 3 with two RBIs.
Flores picked up her fifth win of the season (5-0) as she pitched a complete game, giving up six runs (three earned) on eight hits with 13 strikeouts and seven walks on 166 pitches

The Aztecs found themselves down 7-3 in the 4th inning but rallied with two runs in the 4th and four runs in the 6th to take the lead for good.
The Aztecs trailed 7-5 in the 6th inning but Nunez hit an RBI single to score Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View HS), who drew a leadoff walk in the inning. With two outs, Rivera went yard with a three-run shot to right field to score sophomore Talia Martin (Mountain View HS) and Nunez.
The Aztecs chipped away and cut it to a two-run deficit at 7-5 in the 4th inning when Nunez hit a two-run RBI single to plate Ortiz, who hit a leadoff double and Figueroa, who reached on an error.
Nunez closed out the game going 2 for 4 with four RBIs. Rivera went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and a run. Noriega hit an RBI double in the 1st inning and closed out the game 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Martin finished 2 for 4 with two runs. Ortiz went 2 for 3 with a run and Lopez was 1 for 4 with an RBI.
Camacho picked up the win as she pitched a complete-game, giving up seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits with six strikeouts and two walks on 133 pitches.
The Aztecs will hit the road on Friday when they play an ACCAC doubleheader at Scottsdale Community College. First game starts at 12:00 p.m.
