200 Medley and 800 Free Relay’s Both Win at Day 1 of Big 12 Championships

(Federal Way, WA)  The first day of Big 12 Championships started off with four wins for No. 4/17 Sun Devil Swim and Dive. Sweeping the 200 medley relay and the 800 free relays Tuesday night at Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.

The men are leading the way after day one with 176 points and hold an eight-point lead. The women are currently in second place with 168 points and are two points behind Houston entering Wednesday.

Miriam Sheehan, Iza Adame, Julia Ullmann and Caroline Bentz set a school record in the 200 medley relay becoming Big 12 champions in 1:35.63. It’s the first time the ASU women have become conference champions in the event.

Lucien Vergnes, Andy Dobrazanski, Ilya Kharun and Jonny Kulow set the standard in the relay by setting a new Big 12 record in 1:21.16, which is a season best becoming Big 12 Champions.

In the 800 free relay, Erin Milligan clocked in the fastest 200 free split of 1:44.49, giving the Sun Devil women a three second lead, which the relay team never looked back. Earning a Big 12 title after Charli Brown extended the lead and Alexa Reyna bringing the win home for the Sun Devils in 7:04.24 for a NCAA ‘B’ cut. It’s also the first time ASU’s women have won a conference title in the event.

For the men they came back on their arch-rival Arizona with Filip Senc-Samardzic clocking in a 1:32.12 200 free which closed the gap between the Wildcats. Patrick Sammon then extended the lead with a 1:31.89 anchor split helping the Sun Devils win their second relay of the week and set a meet record in 6:08.54.

Tomorrow prelims begin at 11 a.m. MST on ESPN+ beginning with the 500 free, 200 IM and the 50 free, and the 1m and 3m diving competition.

Diving Results

The Big 12 introduced the team diving event to the championships where divers from both the men’s and women’s teams competed for the team Big 12 title.

The ASU women finished in ninth with 224.50 points that scored 40 points for the team and the ASU men finished in sixth place with 271.05 points, giving the team 24 points on the first night of competition.

Tomorrow diving will compete on the 1m diving springboard for the women and the 3m diving final for the men.
