Wes Ball and Gabe Oldham dominate with double-doubles as Men’s Basketball halts Scottsdale CC for coach Brian Peabody’s 250th Pima career win

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (18-0, 6-0 in ACCAC) continued its record-setting start with its 18th straight victory on Saturday against Scottsdale Community College (5-10, 3-3).

The No. 6 ranked Aztecs beat the Artichokes 82-72 in their first ACCAC conference game since Dec. 11.

The Artichokes made things interesting as they went on a 17-9 to cut Pima’s lead to 80-72 with 40.9 seconds left. Sophomore Cohenj Gonzales (Mesquite HS) was fouled and he hit both free throws with 31.7 seconds left. The Artichokes opted not to foul again as the clock expired.  

The Aztecs took their first double digit lead when sophomore Kota Benson (Mesa HS) converted on all three free throws to make it 20-10 with 11:15 left in the half. The Aztecs held a 43-30 lead at halftime.

Up 54-41, sophomore Gabe Oldham stole the ball and completed the pass break with a jam. Gonzales hit his only three-point basket to make it a 20-point deficit at 61-41 with 12:14 left. The Aztecs led by as much as 22 points at 63-41.

The interior play of Oldham and fellow sophomore Wes Ball (Marana HS) could not be contained as Ball finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds as he went 8 for 12 from the field. Oldham closed it out with 16 points and 11 rebounds, along with five steals, five blocks and two assists.

Gonzales scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half. He did his damage from the foul line going 7 for 8 from the stripe. He also had five rebounds, and four assists.

Sophomore Max Majerle (Arcadia HS) also scored in double figures with 14 points as he was 2 for 4 from downtown and 4 for 4 from the free throw line. He also had five assists.

The win gave head coach Brian Peabody his 250th Pima career victory. He is currently in his 13th season overall and has a record of 250-132.

The Aztecs will play at Phoenix College on Wednesday in ACCAC conference action. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m. The Aztecs won the first meeting 113-59 on Nov. 20 at the West Campus Aztec Gym.
