(Mesa, AZ) The Park University Gilbert women’s basketball team dropped a high octane scoring contest 94-84 to No. 13 Arizona Christian this afternoon at Arizona Athletic Grounds. The Bucs fall to 10-7 on the season and 4-3 in GSAC play. The Firestorm up its record to 19-2, 7-0.
The Buccaneers who struggled from the floor in their last game, returned to form today, making 46 percent of its shots, but the Firestorm also shot well making 47 percent from the floor and taking eight more shots and making four more than the Bucs.
The 10-point margin made the final score look wider than the game actually was as every quarter was close. The Bucs opened with a 7-0 lead before ACU outscored the Bucs 19-7 the remainder of the stanza to take a 19-14 lead after one period.
The Bucs outscored the Firestorm in the second period 29-28 to cut the deficit to four heading into intermission. Park cut the lead to two points at one point in the third quarter before ACU went on a run to widen the margin to as large as 11, but the Bucs cut it back to a six points by the end of the third.
Park cut the lead to three early in the fourth but that is as close as they would get the remainder of the game. ACU knocked down its free throws down the stretch to increase the final margin of victory at the end.
Savannah Huerta led the Bucs with 18 points, Aubry Saleapaga had 16 and Alynna Palacios 13 points. Palacios led the team in rebounds with eight and Kayla Schroeder led the team in assists with five and steals with four.
Park will look to get off the schneid next week as they host Hope International and Life Pacific next Thursday, January 30 and Saturday February 1 at Arizona Athletic Grounds in Mesa, Ariz. Thursday’s game commences at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday’s contest starts at 12 p.m.
