Three ASU Skaters Named Hobey Baker Award Nominees

(St. Paul, MN)  Three skaters on the Arizona State hockey team, Ryan Kirwan, Noah Beck and Bennett Schimek were named to the Hobey Baker Memorial Award watchlist as announced by the organization on Wednesday morning.  

Award criteria include candidates exhibiting the exceptional character traits of the award’s namesake, Hobey Baker. A legendary American hero, Baker was a World War I fighter pilot and was known as America’s greatest amateur athlete in his day, excelling at hockey and football at Princeton University. Award candidates must demonstrate strength of character both on and off the ice, contribute to the integrity of his team and display outstanding skills in all phases of the game. Consideration should be given to scholastic achievement and sportsmanship.

BENNETT SCHIMEK 2024-25 CAMPAIGN

  • His 21 points this season is tied for second-most on the Arizona State team
  • His 21-point season thus far is a career single season best
  • He scored his first career shorthanded goal in the season-opening game at Air Force. He excelled on the special teams that night to complete the game against the Falcons with one power play goal and two shorthanded goals for his first career hat trick.
  • Won NCHC Forward of the Week after the season-opening series at Air Force after a six-point weekend which included a four-point game (3G, 1A) on Friday and a two point night on Saturday (1G, 1A).
  • His four points at Air Force on Oct. 4 tied a career single game high for Schimek
  • Scored goals in both games at then-No. 1 Denver en route to ASU’s road sweep of the Pioneers
  • Tallied a single game career high for assists with three in a single game versus Robert Morris on Jan. 3, 2025
  • In the last six games played in the start of the New Year, Schimek tallied a point in all but one for seven points in the last five games

NOAH BECK 2024-25 CAMPAIGN

  • Leads the Arizona State team in points with 22 (4G, 18A)Is a point per game player with 22 points through 22 games played. Beck has competed in every ASU game this season
  • Started the season with a four-game point scoring streak which included eight points (1G, 7A)
  • Leads the ASU team in power play goals (4). The mark is tied for fourth in the NCHC
  • Beck is the fourth-best point scoring defenseman in the country. He is second best in the NCHC by only a two-point differential
  • Boasts seven multipoint games this season, second-most on the ASU team.
  • Won NCHC Defenseman of the Week during Week 1 of the season following a five-point weekend at Air Force
  • Tallied 2 points in a single game vs. then-No. 10 Michigan
  • Notched a two-point game at then-No. 11 Colorado College with one power play goal and one assist
  • Went on a five-game point scoring streak dating back from Dec. 7, 2024 vs. Minnesota Duluth to Jan. 11, 2025. The streak included games against ranked opponents then-No. 16 Cornell and then-No. 14 North Dakota
  • In the last seven games dating back to Dec. 7, 2024, Beck tallied nine points
  • Leads the ASU team in TOI with a 21:53 average

RYAN KIRWAN 2024-25 CAMPAIGN

  • Leads the National Collegiate Hockey Conference in goals scored this season with 14. His .64 goals per game also leads the conference
  • His 14 goals scored is a career best in a single season
  • .133 shot percentage is a career best in a single season
  • Won NCHC Forward of the Week during Week 12 of the season after notching a five-point weekend (4G, 1A) en route to the Desert Hockey Classic championship and MVP title. Kirwan scored his second career hat trick against Robert Morris before tallying one goal and one assist versus then-No. 16 Cornell.
  • Went on a five-game point scoring streak from Dec. 6, 2024-Jan. 10, 2025 that included five goals and three assists for eight total points.
  • Boasts three games with a +3 plus/minus, including in games against Minnesota Duluth, Robert Morris, and then-No. 16 St. Cloud State
  • Friday’s three-point night at St. Cloud State was his fourth multipoint night of the season and the second time he’s tallied three points in a single game this season
  • His 21 points this season is tied for second-most on the ASU team, a mark that is just one shy of the team lead
  • His 105 shots on net this season ranks fifth in the country
  • Possession driving: Kirwan is 11th in the NCAA in puck recoveries off offensive rebounds per 60 minutes of TOI. This is key to making him a lethal scorer as he drives possession and wins battles

The 2025 Hobey Baker Award winner will be announced from a field of three Hobey Hat Trick finalists on Friday, April 11, 2025 during the NCAA Frozen Four Championship in St. Louis, MO.
