No. 3/14 Swim and Dive Emerge Victorious Over No. 23/24 Minnesota

(Tempe, AZ)  In a complete team effort for both the men’s and women’s teams, No. 3/14 Sun Devil Swim and Dive defeated No. 23/24 Minnesota Friday afternoon at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The Sun Devil men won 206-94 and the Sun Devil women defeated the Gophers 191-109.

In dual meets, the Sun Devil men remain a perfect 8-0 this season, a year after going 9-0-1 during the 2023-24 national championship campaign. The Sun Devil women move to 7-3 in duals.

Diving Results

In the women’s 3-meter diving competition, Minnesota took the top three spots while freshman Mayari Coriano was the top Sun Devil placing fourth with 241.95 points

In the men’s 1-meter diving competition, Lane Stallworth was second with 266.25 points and Caleb Liban was third with 260.85 points.

Lane Stallworth was the leading Sun Devil in the 3m diving competition by placing third with 357.98 points and Kayden Hayes was the top Sun Devil on the 1m diving competition having 270.45 points.

Event-by-Event Breakdown

200 Medley Relay

Both the Sun Devil women and men started the event by sweeping the 200 medley relay. Miriam Sheehan, Iza Adame, Julia Ullmann and Caroline Bentz took first place on the women’s side with a time of 1:36.40. Lucien Vergnes, Andy Dobrzanski, Ilya Kharun and Jonny Kulow placed first for the men with a time of 1:22.71.

1000 Free

The women’s 1000 free had the Sun Devils finishing in third place as Minnesota jockeyed for the top two spots. Alexa Reyna took third place with a time of 9:48.19. The Gophers took the top spot however ASU’s Daniel Matheson took second place with a time of 8:58.72.

200 Free

The Gophers snatched the top spot in the women’s 200 freestyle. Erin Milligan and Charli Browntook second and third respectively. Milligan finished with a time of 1:47.68, and Brown finished with a time of 1:48.49. On the men’s side, ASU swept the podium. Tiago Behar took first with a time of 1:33.61, Patrick Sammon took second with a time of 1:33.70 and Quin Seider took third with a time of 1:35.04.

100 Back

Arizona State took the top spot in the women’s 100 back. Miriam Sheehan led the way for the Sun Devils with a time of 53.63 and Payden Rafferty finished in second achieving a time of 54.89.3 for third place. The men swept the top three spots with Jono Adam leading the way for the Sun Devils with a time of 46.29. The freshman Lucien Vergnes took second with a time of 46.97, and Quinlan Gould took the final spot in third place with a time of 47.31. 

100 Breast

The women’s 100 breast saw ASU seize the top three positions. Iza Adame finished in first with a time of 1:00.22, Ginger McMahon placed in second with a time of 1:01.61 and Emma Gehlert took third with a time of 1:01.81. The men’s 100 breast featured the Sun Devils taking the top two spots. Andy Dobrzanski placed in first with a time of 52.75 and Oscar Bilbao took second with a time of 54.22.

200 Fly

Arizona State captured the top two spots in the women’s 200 Butterfly, with Sonia Vaishnani concluding with a time of 1.59.03, followed by Julia Ullmann in second place with a time of 1:59.07. Illya Kharun took the top spot for ASU, with a winning time of 1:40.13 in the 200 butterfly, and Jake Mason rounded out the top three with a time of 1:46.38.

50 Free

ASU grabbed first and third place in the women’s 50 free. Caroline Bentz was first with a time of 22.23 and Indigo Armon finished in third with a time of 23.14. In the men’s 50 free, the Sun Devils swept the podium. Tommy Palmer finished in first with a time of 19.19, followed by Jonny Kulow and Tolu Young with times of 19.34 and 19.63 respectively.

100 Free

Arizona State took first place and second in the women’s 11 freestyle. Erin Milligan completed a time of 49.61 and Indigo Armon followed suit in second with a time of 50.48. The men swept the 100-meter freestyle. Jonny Kulow finished in 42.38 for first place. Followed in second was Tommy Palmer with a time of 42.89, and Tiago Behar was third with a time of 43.85. 

200 Back

The Sun Devils swept the women’s 200 back with Caroline Bentz, Charli Brown and Jordan Greber taking the top three spots. Bentz finished in first with a time of 1:54.61, followed by Brown and Greber with times of 1:58.36 and 1:58.61. Jono Adam and Quinlan Gould snatched the top two positions as Adam finished with a time of 1:42.26 and Gould followed with a time of 1:44.88.

200 Breast

Arizona State swept first and second in the women’s 200 breaststroke. Senior Iza Adame finished with a time of 2:12.40 and fellow senior Emma Gehlert with a time of 2:12.55. The Sun Devils took the top three spots in men’s 200 breaststroke. Finishing in first with a time of 1:54.69 was Andy Dobrzanski. In second place with a time of 1:58.14 was Cale Martter and in third was Oscar Bilbao in 1:58.76. 

500 Free

In a close finish, Alexa Reyna took first place in the women’s 500 freestyle with a time of 4:44.83. Grace Lindberg finished in third place with a time of 4:48.47. Minnesota took first and third in the men’s 500 freestyle, and Daniel Matheson finished in second for ASU with a time of 4:22.07.

100 Fly

Arizona State finished first and third in the women’s 100 butterfly. Julia Ullmann achieved a time of 53.30 in first place, and in third was junior Hannah Hurleman in 55.46. The men achieved first and third in the 100 butterfly. Ilya Kharun won with a time of 44.73 and Filip Senc-Samardzic came in second in 46.35.

200 IM

ASU’s women swept the podium in the 200 IM with Sonia Vaishnani, Charli Brown and Ella Guilfoil taking the top three spots. Vaishnani finished in first with a time of 2:01.24, followed by Brown and Guilfoil with times of 2:01.36 and 2:01.77. The Sun Devil men also swept their 200 IM. Cale Martter finished in the top spot with a time of 1:47.68, followed by Lucien Vergnes with a time of 1:48.08 and Michael Hochwalt with a time of 1:48.27.

400 Free Relay

In the final event of the meet both teams finished the day strong earning first place. The ASU women won with a time of 3:17.62. The men’s won with a time of 2:48.46. 

Up Next

The Sun Devils will take a week off and prepare for their last road trip of the regular season for a quad-meet against the top swim and dive programs in the country, facing off against Texas, Virginia and N.C. State in Austin, Texas on January 24-25.
