No. 3/14 Swim and Dive Conquers Cross-Town Rival Grand Canyon

(Tempe, AZ)  On the first weekend of 2025 No. 3/14 Sun Devil Swim and Dive won all their respective events Saturday afternoon at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The No. 3 men’s team won 233-66, while the No. 14 women’s team won 248-48.

Caroline Bentz won both the 100 and 200 free, winning the 100 freestyle in 48.73, and managed to win the 200 free in 1:47.41. She was also part of the winning 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay. Freshman Tolu Young won the 50 free in 19.90, the only swimmer to have a sub-20 time on the day, and won the 100 fly in 47.62.

Alexa Reyna swept the distance events, winning the 1650 free in 16:48.07 and the 500 free in 4:48.42. Daniel Matheson won the 500 free in 4:21.69, and also was victorious in the 400 IM in 3:52.31.

The Sun Devils are back at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center tomorrow, Jan. 10 when the men’s and women’s teams dual Minnesota at 2 p.m. MT. Follow the team’s Twitter/X account, @ASUSwimDive and on Instagram @sundevilswimdive. 

Diving Results

  • Sophomore Kayden Hayes won the 1m diving competition with 276.00 points, Mayori Coriano was third with 243.60 points.
  • For the men’s side, Lane Stallworth won the 1m diving competition with 315.90.
  • On the 3m diving competition, Mayari Coriano won the competition totaling 254.85 points. In second place was Ashlyn Kirsch with 247.20 points and Kayden Hayes with 243.60 points. Caleb Liban won the event with 311.55 points on the men’s side.


Event-by-Event Breakdown

200 Medley Relay
The men’s and women’s teams both clinched a first-place effort in the relay to kick off the meet. On top of that, Arizona State’s men’s and women’s teams managed to clinch second and third place to sweep the relays.

1650 Free

The women’s 1650 freestyle had ASU’s Alexa Reyna taking first place with a time of 16:48.07, Katherine Randall took second with a time of 16:59.9 and Lia Csulak in third with a time of 17:07.8. For the men, the Sun Devils swept the race with top-three finishes coming from Dylan Gravely with a time of 15:21.71, Ryan King with a time of 15:28.2, and Issac Fleig with a close finishing time of 15.29.1.

200 Free

Caroline Bentz paved the way for the women’s team clinching first place with a 1:47.41 time. Zoe Summer and Jordan Greber followed behind her to grab second and third place, giving the Sun Devils another sweep in the meet. The men’s team recorded a sweep in the 200 yard freestyle with Tiago Behar taking first place with a 1:34.79 time. Jonny Kulow and Ilya Kharun followed to finish second and third. 

100 Back

Payden Rafferty’s effort topped the 100 yard backstroke event with a finishing time of 54.51. Following were seniors Hana Edwards and Emma Gatzke who took second and third with a respective times of 54.96 and 55.98. The men’s team had Lucien Vergnes’  with a top time of 46.66. Then was Jono Adam with a time of 47.82 and following was Jack Wadsworth with a time of 48.32.

100 Breast

The men’s and women’s team both clinched first place in the 100 yard breaststroke with Iza Adame taking first place with a 1:01.06 time. Andy Dobrazanski cleared the men’s heat winning the race in 52.92.

200 Fly

The ASU women swept the event with Julia Ullmann clocking in a winning time of 1:59.82, followed by Grace Lindberg at 2:00.71, then Vivian Wilson who was third in 2:06.39. For the men, Filip Senc-Samardzic won the race in 1:46.37, followed by Jake Mason at 1:47.05 and Cale Martter in 1:50.18.

50 Free

The women’s team took the 50 yard freestyle with a sweep. Indigo Armon took home first place in 23.15. Miriam Sheehan and Erin Milligan finished milliseconds after her for second and third place. On the men’s side, freshman Tolu Young flew finished in a sub 20 second time in 19.90 time to take first place. 

100 Free

The women’s team started off the event with vigor highlighted by Caroline Bentz impressive finishing time 48.73, just seconds off of a school record. Julia Ullmann and Catherine Vaughan finished in second and third with respective times of 50.44 and 52.37. For the men, the top time came from Ilya Kharun with a speedy 42.15 and followed closely by Filip Senc-Samardzic and Tiago Behar who ended with a time of 44.28 and 44.44. 

200 Back

Ella Guifoil led the women’s team to a sweep in the 200 yard backstroke finishing at 1:59.14. Hana Edwardsand Payden Rafferty both finished sub 2 minutes to finish second and third. In the men’s heat, Lucien Vergnes finished with a 1:44.95 time to take home first place. Jono Adam added a second-place finish in 1:47.64

200 Breast

The women’s swept the 200 breaststroke with Emma Gehlert winning the race in 2:13.34, then Iza Adameplacing second at 2:14.82, followed by freshman Kaelia Hughes in 2:15.79. On the men’s side Andy Dobrzanski won in 1:55.30, and Cale Martter finished third in 2:02.89.

500 Free

The women’s team continued to dominate with another sweep in the 500 yard freestyle heat. Alexa Reynaled the Sun Devils to first in 4:48.42. Elli Straume and Lia Csulak swam their way to second and third place. The men’s team followed with a sweep of their own with Daniel Matheson taking home first in 4:21.69. Jake Mason and Reece Grady trailed behind Matheson to take home second and third place. 

100 Fly

The women’s team swept the 100 yard butterfly led by Hannah Hurleman’s finishing time of 54.99. Miriam Sheehan earned second with a time of 55.21 and was followed closely by Zoe Summar who ended with a time of 55.39. The men’s heat took the first and second place times in their heat led by Tolu Young with a time of 47.62 and reared by Jonny Kulow finishing mere milliseconds after. 

400 IM

Another sweep for the women’s team in the 400 yard individual medley, with Sonia Vaishnani paving the way to first in 4:15.87. Charli Brown added a second-place finish in 4:18.04 and Grace Lindberg followed behind her finishing in 4:19.28 to finish third. The men matched the women with a sweep of their own, with Daniel Matheson taking home first in 3:52.31. Joe Stephenson and Dylan Gravely finished right behind him to take second and third place. 

400 Free Relay

The men’s and women’s team finished out the day strong by both earning first place in the 400 yard freestyle relay. The women won with a time of 3:20.50 with a team of Bentz-Milligan-Brinker and Straume. On the men’s side, they won the relay in 2:52.94 with Sammon-Behar-Osterndorf and Wadsworth leading the way.
