Kharun Shines, Brown and Bentz Break Two School Records Friday in Austin

(Austin, TX)  No. 4/17 Sun Devil Swim and Dive battled at the Eddie Reese Showdown and won five events, with the team placing second in the Friday night session against the top competition in the nation in Austin.

The final session of the Eddie Reese Showdown will conclude tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. MST/10 a.m. CST.

Combined Team Scores (Friday Night):

1st: Texas – 715
2nd: Arizona State – 620.5
3rd: Virginia – 583.5
4th: NC State – 556

The day was highlighted by victories by the men in the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay, along with the men sweeping the podium in the 50 free. Ilya Kharun, Jonny Kulow and Tommy Palmer all registered times under 19.00 seconds, becoming the only team in the country to have three swimmers with sub-19 times in the event.

Charli Brown set a new school record in the 400 IM, clocking in at 4:07.58 and placing fourth in the final. Graduate Caroline Bentz also set a school record in the 100 back with a 51.79.

Friday Night Session:

In the 200 free relay, ASU’s ‘A’ team composed of Caroline Bentz, Miriam Sheehan, Erin Milligan and Julia Ullman secured fourth place in 1:28.06. For the men, they won the 200 free relay in 1:14.06, which consisted of Kharun, Palmer, Tolu Young and Jonny Kulow.

Daniel Matheson was the top Sun Devil in the 400 IM, clocking in a 3:45.69 for fourth. Cale Martter followed, placing fifth in 3:46.29.

Freshman Julia Ullmann placed sixth in the 100 fly in 52.10 and was the top Sun Devil, and Hannah Hurleman set a season-best in the event with a 54.59. Ilya Kharun won the 100 fly in a swift 43.90.

Erin Milligan placed seventh in the 200 freestyle, swimming a 1:47.31. Patrick Sammon was second in the 200 free final in 1:31.85 and Tiago Behar was second in 1:33.27. 

Iza Adame set a season-best in the 100 breaststroke in 59.49 as Emma Gehlert was eighth in 1:00.82. For the men, Andy Dobrozanski was third in 52.18 and Oscar Bilbao was fifth with a season-best time of 52.77.

Miriam Sheehan placed seventh in the 100 back in 52.72. For the Sun Devil men, freshman Lucien Vergnesled the way, placing third in 46.16, and Jonathon Adam was seventh in 46.88.

Friday Morning Session:

The Sun Devil men won the 200 medley relay swimming the fastest time of the season in 1:21.77, consisting of Lucien Vergnes, Andy Dobrzanski, Ilya Kharun and Jonny Kulow. The Sun Devil women’s ‘A’ team were disqualified, and the ‘B’ team finished seventh in 1:39.21.

Deniz Ertan was the top Sun Devil in the 500 free, finishing eighth in 4:42.86, and Alexa Reyna followed in 10th place in 4:44.79. Daniel Matheson was the top Sun Devil on the men’s side, swimming a 4:15.92.

Sonia Vaishnani set a season-best in the 200 IM to finish in eighth in 1:58.13. For the men, freshman Vergnes set a season best in the event to finish fifth in 1:45.15. Michael Hochwalt was seventh at 1:45.83.

Rounding out the morning in the 50 free, Caroline Bentz was the top Sun Devil and finished seventh in the race at 22.24.

Virginia won the morning session with 228 points, as ASU compiled 96.5 points. For the men’s side, the Sun Devils were second with 209 points as Texas won the morning session with 233.5 points. The men swept the podium, led by Kharun winning the race in 18.62, followed by Kulow at 18.90 and Tommy Palmerplacing third in 18.99. They’re the only men’s team to have three men swim a sub-19 in the 50 free.
