Bucs Men’s Volleyball Drops Season Opener to Dordt

(Mesa, AZ)  The Park University Gilbert men’s volleyball team started its 2025 campaign with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-18) loss to Dordt University Friday afternoon at Arizona Athletic Grounds in Mesa, Ariz. Park is 0-1 and Dordt ups its record to 2-0.

Dordt came into the season receiving votes in the inaugural NAIA Coaches Poll and beat OUAZ who was also receiving votes in the poll Thursday night.

The Buccaneers are rebuilding with a talented freshman class, mixed with veteran seniors and graduates but the biggest impact player was not available in outside hitter Xander Thesz due to an undisclosed injury.

Offensively, the Bucs missed the 6-7 hitter from Phoenix, Ariz., as they hit negatively on the afternoon with 18 kills and 19 errors on 74 attacks. The Defenders had 38 kills and only 10 errors as they hit .337 for the match.

The Bucs were led by freshman middle blocker Dominic Smith from Tucson, Ariz., who had five kills and hit .231. Senior Jake Burdick had 10 assists and sophomore libero Jeff Agcaoili had 12 digs. Smith and senior David Shafereach had three blocks.

The Bucs now take to the road for five games in three day in Ohio. It starts at the Rio Grande Invitational in Rio Grande, Ohio on Jan. 31 when the Bucs take on Aquinas College and host University of Rio Grande. Game times are 3 and 6 p.m. Arizona time, respectively.
