Aztecs Men’s Basketball uses 15-2 run to secure double-digit lead and beat Glendale CC to improve to 22-0

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (22-0, 10-0 in ACCAC) got tested in its game against Glendale Community College (13-6, 5-4) on Saturday at the West Campus, but a second half run secured the win.

The No. 5 ranked Aztecs won their 22nd straight game after beating the Gauchos 91-68. It was Pima’s 19thvictory by double digits. The last time they played the Gauchos they escaped with an 86-80 win on Dec. 7 in Glendale.

The Aztecs held on to a 64-56 lead halfway through the second half, but sophomore Max Majerle’s (Arcadia HS) three-pointer helped spark a 15-2 run in the next five minutes as they took control with a 79-58 lead with 5:30left. Sophomore Wes Ball (Marana HS) hit a couple baskets during that stretch. Sophomore Kota Benson (Mesa HS) ran a couple pick-n-roll plays for Ball and sophomore Gabe Oldham to cap off the run.

Pima’s final 12 points came off three-pointers from Benson, two from freshman Mason Hunt (Bradshaw Mountain HS) and Majerle.

Majerle scored 14 of his 20 points in the first half as he finished the game going 7 for 14 from the field and 6 for 13 from beyond the arc. He also had four rebounds.

Ball scored 10 of his 14 points in the second half as he also grabbed four rebounds and had three assists.

Benson went 4 for 6 from the field and 3 for 4 from downtown as he scored 13 points to go with eight boards and six assists. Oldham also contributed with 13 points as he was 4 for 5 shooting. He also snatched six rebounds.

The bench scored 27 points as Hunt had 15 points and freshman Kaelum Brown added 10 points and seven rebounds.

Sophomore Cohenj Gonzales (Mesquite HS) was 1 for 10 from the field with just four points but he had eight assists, three steals, three rebounds and two blocks.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Wednesday when they host Mesa Community College in ACCAC conference action. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.
