(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (10-3) picked up its 10th win of the season on Sunday after the second day of the Aztec Holiday Classic.
The No. 13 ranked Aztecs used a 20-6 run in the fourth quarter to beat Central Arizona College 75-59.
The Aztecs closed out the second quarter on a 10-4 run to take a 36-31 advantage at the break. They used an 11-3 run to open the third quarter to go up 47-34, but the Vaqueras countered with an 8-0 run to close the gap to 47-42. Pima clinged to a 51-44 lead heading into the fourth.
Sophomore Mattanaya Vital (Amphitheater HS) set the tone of the final quarter with a three-pointer to give Pima back their double-digit lead at 54-44. Sophomore Kennedi Niemann’s three-point play was part of a 20-6 run as the Aztecs took their biggest lead of the game at 71-50.
Freshman Kiley Sours-Miller produced a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds as she went 9 for 12 from the field. She also had two blocks.
Sophomore Rori Hoffmeyer (Cibola HS) closed out the game with 15 points and eight rebounds as she finished 5 for 8 shooting.
Freshman Lucy Land added 11 points off the bench as she was a flawless 4 for 4 from the field, 1 for 1 from three-point range and 2 for 2 from the free throw line. She also added five rebounds. Vital contributed with nine points.
Sophomore Amelie Buffill-Gutierrez (Sabino HS) and Niemann each had six assists. Niemann added seven points and five rebounds while Bufill-Gutierrez had four points.
The Aztecs will close out play in the Aztec Holiday Classic on Monday when they go up against Cuyamaca College. Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m.
