Max Majerle nets 24 points as No. 6 Men’s Basketball wins by 99 points

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (12-0) dominated its game on Monday against UTU Academy in a non-conference matchup.

The No. 6 ranked Aztecs defeated the Gorillas 150-51 at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

The Aztecs led by as much as 101 points (148-47 and 150-49) on two occasions in the final minutes of the second half.

Up 23-12 with 14:11 left in the first half, the Aztecs went on a 26-4 run to make it 49-16. The Aztecs scored 81 points to conclude the first half (81-30).

Pima outscored UTU Academy 31-3 during a stretch in the second half.

For the second straight game, the Aztecs produced nine players in double figures. Sophomore Max Majerle (Arcadia HS) shot 8 for 12 from the field finishing with a game-high 24 points.

Sophomore Kota Benson (Mesa HS) scored 16 points after going 6 for 7 from the field and 4 for 5 from three-point range. He also had eight assists and five rebounds. Freshman Isaac Johnson was a flawless 7 for 7 from the field as he also posted 16 points to go with seven rebounds off the bench.

Sophomore Cooper Jones (Buena HS) drained three 3-pointers as he added 15 points off the bench.

Sophomore Wes Ball (Marana HS) finished the game with 13 points and eight rebounds while fellow sophomore Cohenj Gonzales (Mesquite HS) had 12 points and four assists.

Freshman Aidan Schmidt (Casteel HS) scored 11 points after going 4 for 6 from the floor while freshmen Khalon Johnson and Kaelum Brown each had 10 points.

The Pima bench finished with 79 points. The Aztecs went 26 for 31 from the free throw line and shot 62 percent (58 for 93) for the game.

The Aztecs are off for the holiday break and will return to the court for the Aztec Holiday Classic from Dec. 28-30. All games will be at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium. The Aztecs play Central Arizona College on Saturday, Dec. 28 at 2:00 p.m.
