(Tucson, AZ) The Tucson Sugar Skulls announce the return of dynamic playmaker Davonte Sapp-Lynch for the 2025 IFL season. Entering his second season with the Sugar Skulls, Sapp-Lynch brings a wealth of experience, versatility, and a proven track record of excellence on the field.
In 2024, Sapp-Lynch made an immediate impact during his first season in Tucson, while appearing in only nine games. He rushed for 406 yards on 78 attempts, scoring nine rushing touchdowns, which placed him 11th on the IFL rushing leaderboard. His contributions extended beyond the ground game, adding 16 receptions for 125 yards and two receiving touchdowns. A force on special teams, Sapp-Lynch recorded 211 kick return yards, including a season-long return of 34 yards. He also made his presence felt on defense, tallying two tackles.
“Davonte is a true vet leader and brought a combination of speed, quickness, and power to the team when he joined. He was one of the major bright lights in the league’s second-ranked rushing offense last season. He’s not only a great running back, but also a great receiver that any QB would want to play alongside. You can’t just focus on one aspect of the run game.” – Head Coach Billy Back.
A seasoned IFL veteran, Sapp-Lynch’s career spans multiple teams, including the Vegas KnightHawks, San Diego Strikeforce, Spokane Shock, and Nebraska Danger. His standout season came in 2019 with the Nebraska Danger, where he earned All-IFL honors and was named the league’s Most Dynamic Player.
Before joining the IFL, Sapp-Lynch showcased his skills overseas in Germany, where his performances earned tryouts with the Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, and BC Lions of the CFL. Collegiately, he set a team record with 777 rushing yards and three touchdowns at the University of New Mexico Highlands, after an impressive stint at Contra Costa Junior College, where he rushed for nearly 1,500 yards in a single season.
A native of Oakland, California, Sapp-Lynch began his football journey at Sheldon High School. His return to the Sugar Skulls strengthens an already competitive roster as the team aims to build on its momentum heading into 2025.
