Ball and Gonzales each net 14 points as No. 7 Men’s Basketball pulls away in the second half to top South Mountain

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (8-0, 3-0 in ACCAC) won its eighth straight game to start the season as it hosted South Mountain Community College (5-5, 2-1) on Wednesday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

The No. 7 ranked Aztecs won both halves by double digits as they beat the Cougars 93-58.

The Aztecs started the game on a 22-4 run in the first seven and a half minutes as Pima led 46-30 at halftime.

The Cougars opened the second half with an 11-4 run to cut Pima’s lead to single digits at 50-41. Sophomore Gabe Oldham scored in the paint and freshman Brigg Wolff (Mesa Mountain View HS) made a steal on defense and converted on a three-point play as it sparked an 11-0 run to put the Aztecs up 61-41.

The Aztecs used another 16-2 run later in the second half to put them up 77-47 to put the game out of reach.

The Aztecs out-rebounded the Cougars 56-41 and went 24 for 30 (80 percent) from the free throw line. The Aztecs also shot 49 percent from the field (32 for 66).

Sophomore Wes Ball shot 4 for 7 from the field and finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. He was 6 for 6 from the free throw line. Fellow sophomore Cohenj Gonzales (Mesquite HS) also scored 14 points and was 6 for 6 from the foul line. He also had six assists and three steals.

Oldham posted 12 points, nine rebounds and two steals while sophomore Max Majerle (Arcadia HS) added 11 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Sophomore Cooper Jones (Buena HS) was 3 for 3 from the field with eight points. Wolff had seven points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Freshman Isaac Johnson finished with seven points, seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals while freshman Kaelum Brown (Casteel HS) added six points and five rebounds.

The Aztecs hit the road on Saturday for an afternoon ACCAC conference matchup at Glendale Community College. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
