(Mesa, AZ) The Park University Gilbert women’s basketball team was undone by 31 turnovers in an 85-73 loss to No. 24 Lewis-Clark State College this evening at Arizona Athletic Grounds. With the loss the Bucs drop to 3-2 on the season.
The 31 turnovers by the Bucs turned into 30 points for the Warriors who shot 53 percent from the floor for the game. The Bucs stayed in it by way of its three-point shooting as both Kayla Schroeder and Savannah Huertatied the school record for three-point baskets in a game with seven each.
The Warriors kept the Bucs at bay by handling their press and then using quick pinpoint passing to garner easy layups throughout the game.
The Bucs trailed by 10 after the first quarter, and by 19 early in the second quarter but outscored the Warriors 17-7 down the stretch to cut the deficit to eight at the half.
The Bucs cut into the deficit in the second half getting as close as a point before the Warriors scored eight points over a minute to retake the lead and kept the Bucs from cutting into the deficit more and extended the lead late to finish with a 12-point victory.
Huerta (23) and Schroeder (21) each scored over 20 points again to pace the Buccaneer attack. Alynna Palaciosposted a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Kiley Bush tied her career high with 10 points and added five rebounds.
The Bucs dominated on the boards, out rebounding the Warriors by 15 rebounds. Many came on the offensive glass as the Bucs shot only 38 percent from the floor. Their three-point shooting which kept them in the game was at an electric 47 percent as they made 15 trifectas on 32 attempts. The 15 three-pointers would have been a school record last year, but in this season of the three it is the third time in four games the Bucs have made this many or more.
The Bucs continue on their gauntlet of tough games as they play an exhibition game with Utah Valley next Wednesday Nov. 13 before returning home to take on No. 2 University of Providence on Friday, Nov. 15 a 5:30 p.m. at Arizona Athletic Grounds.
