Sun Devil Swim Sweeps Big 12 Swim Awards for Third Time this Season

(Tempe, AZ)  Sun Devil Swim and Dive won four Big 12 weekly swim awards announced by the conference Wednesday afternoon. It’s the third time the team has swept the weekly swim honors.

Bronze medalist Ilya Kharun gathered his third Big 12 Men’s Swimmer of the Week honor. In the victory over No. 1 California and No. 9 Stanford, the sophomore went 3-for-3 in individual events winning the 50 free (18.67), 100 fly (44.01), and the 200 fly (1:39.60). Kharun also contributed to victories in the 200 free relay, 400 free relay and the 200 medley relay.

Graduate Caroline Bentz won her second Big 12 Women’s Swimmer of the Week award, her fourth overall weekly honor this season. Bentz placed second in both the 100 back (52.99) and the 200 back (1:54.70) and was third in the 100 free (49.18). The Virginia Tech transfer was the starting leg in the 200 free relay which placed second and the anchor leg in the 200 medley relay which placed third. 

Freshman Lucien Vergnes earns his second Big 12 Men’s Newcomer of the Week award. In the win over the Bay Area schools, he won the 100 back in 45.32. He also placed second in the 100 breast (52.29) and the 200 back (1;42.32). The Frenchman also helped the Sun Devils win the 200 medley relay by being the starting leg and placed third in the 200 IM (1:45.36).

Freshman Julia Ullmann garnered her first Big 12 Women’s Newcomer of the Week award after winning the 100 fly (52.05) setting a new season best. She also helped the Sun Devils place second in the 200 free relay by swimming a 22.20 anchor 50 free leg. In addition, she was part of the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay teams which finished in third.

The maroon & gold will track back to Greensboro, N.C to compete in the NC State GAC Invitational on Nov. 21-23.
