Sours-Miller and Kennedi Niemann combine for 27 points but Women’s Basketball falls to Utah State-Eastern to close EAC Classic

(Thatcher, AZ)  The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (2-1) closed out play at the Eastern Arizona Classic on Saturday in Thatcher.

The No. 8 ranked Aztecs fell to Utah State University-Eastern 68-55 as Pima went 2-1 against NJCAA Division I competition this weekend.

The Aztecs fell behind by double digits at the end of the first quarter and trailed 35-25 at halftime. The Golden Eagles doubled their lead after the third quarter to take a 58-38 advantage. The Aztecs outscored them 17-10 in the fourth quarter.

Freshman Kiley Sours-Miller continued her strong start to the season as she finished with a game-high 17 points and was 6 for 11 from the field. She also added seven rebounds. Sours-Miller averaged 16.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.7 steals, 1.3 blocks and 1.0 assist in the three games. She also shot 71 percent from the field (22 for 31).

Freshman Kennedi Niemann was the other Aztecs player in double figures with 10 points to go with three assists, two rebounds and one steal. She averaged 9.7 points, 5.0 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals for the Eastern Arizona Classic.

The Pima bench scored 16 points with freshman Lucy Land finishing with five points and six rebounds.

The Aztecs will host their home opener at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Thursday against Illinois Central College. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
