(Billings, MT) The Park University Gilbert women’s basketball team has been off to a torrid start over the first three games of the season, but what can stop a great start? Poor shooting in the second half doomed the Bucs in a 94-71 defeat at the hands of Montana State-Northern in Billings, Mont, this evening. The Bucs fall to 3-1 on the season.
The Buccaneers jumped out to 7-0 lead an forced a time out from the Skylights. The shooting which has been a staple for the Bucs so far this season remained on point as the Bucs held a six-point lead after the first quarter and a two-point advantage at the half.
The Bucs shot 43 percent from beyond the arc in the first half and 42 percent from the floor. The Bucs looked in control and so far this season they have thrived in the second half of games. But tonight, there was a lid put on the basket as the Bucs shot 27 percent in the second half from the floor and dropped to 29 percent from three-point range. In contrast, the Skylight shot 55 percent from the floor in the second half which spelled bad news for the Bucs as they were outscored 52-27 in the second half, the first time they had trailed all season.
The Bucs forced 25 turnovers with 19 steals, but unfortunately turned the ball over themselves 27 times. The Skylights also dominated on the boards outrebounding the Bucs by 14.
Individually, Kayla Schroeder was the only Buc who seemed immune to the basket lid, scoring 16 points on 6-11 shooting from the floor and 4-8 from three. She also had four steals. Savannah Huerta was next with 14 points.
Jacie Bunck led the team on the glass with six boards and Camisha Fuson led the team with five assists. Alynna Palacios led the team with six steals.
The Bucs will attempt to rebound on Monday as they travel to Ogden, Utah to take on Division I Weber State. This will be the first time the Bucs have taken on the Wildcats.
