No. 2/13 Swim and Dive Wins Three Races; Julia Ullmann Sets Women’s 100 Fly Record

(Greensboro, NC)  Number 2/13 Sun Devil Swim and Dive continued their success on the second day of the NC State invite in Greensboro, North Carolina by breaking five records and winning three races Friday evening.


Two school records were set in the 100-fly races. Freshman Julia Ullman broke a 16-year-old school record set in 2008 by Caitlin Andrew by clocking in a 51.65, then Ilya Kharun broke his own school record finishing in 43.85.

In the 200 medley relay, Miriam Sheehan, Iza Adame, Julia Ullmann and Caroline Bentz broke the school record and collected the win at 1:35.78. 

In the 100 back, Caroline Bentz set a new school record finishing in 52.34, setting a new season-best in the process for fourth. Miriam Sheehan won the ‘B’ final in 52.99.

Lucien Vergnes, Andy Dobrzanski, Ilya Kharun and Jonny Kulow followed up their performance with a win in the relay at 1:21.63. The ‘B’ relay of Jack Wadsworth, Oscar Bilbao, Leo Verschooten and Tommy Palmerwas fourth at 1:24.85.

In the 400 IM, Charli Brown and Sonia Vaishnani each made it onto the podium with Brown finishing in 4:11.52 and Vaishnani clocking in a 4:13.87. Michael Hochwalt finished in second in 3:42.12.

In the 200 free, Alexa Reyna made the podium with a third-place finish clocking in a 1:47.09. For the men, they had three in the top four, led by Tiago Behar who finished in 1:33.07. To follow was Jonny Kulow in 1:33.81 and Patrick Sammon in 1:33.86.

Adame finished the 100 breast in second place finishing at 1:00.37. For the men’s side, Andy Dobrzanskisecured a second-place finish in 52.39, while Oscar Bilbao won the ‘B’ final in 52.84. Vergnes was the top Sun Devil taking fourth with a time of 46.27.

Alexa Reyna, Charli Brown, Sonia Vaishnani and Elli Straume finished in 7:09.91 for second place in the 800 free relay, then Filip Senc-Samardzic, Patrick Sammon, Tiago Behar and Quin Seider place second in 6:15.69 to cap day two.

Diving Results:

  • Lane Stallworth finished second in the 3m diving competition with 377.70 points Friday evening, following up his third-place performance in the 1m diving with 334.30.
  • Kayden Hayes finished second in the consolation 1m diving competition with 250.95 points. She also had a second-place finish in the 3m competition with 281.55. Amayah Wiley was third with 248.85.


Morning Prelims:

In the 400 IM, Sonia Vaishnani was second with an NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 4:16.43. Teammate Charli Brownwas third at 4:16.48. For the men, Michael Hochwalt had the top time of 3:45.55 and Daniel Matheson was third with a 3:46.92.

Kharun had the top men’s time in the 100 fly finishing in 44.37..Alexa Reyna placed 4th in the prelims of the 200 free, setting a season-best at 1:47.40.

Tiago Behar was the fastest Sun Devil placing third in 1:33.79 in the 200 free, then, Patrick Sammon was fifth 1:33.89, followed by Seider at 1:34.14, and Kulow was seventh at 1:34.28. Iza Adame placed third in the women’s 100 breast finishing in 1:00.41, a season-best.

In the women’s 100 back, Bentz had the top Sun Devil time to move into the final clocking in a 52.80, which placed sixth overall. Freshman Lucien Vergnes was the top Sun Devil, placing third at 46.08.

Men’s 100 back – Jono Adam (46.45, 5th), Jack Wadsworth (46.73, 7th)

The Sun Devils will wrap up in Greensboro for Day 3 of the NC State Invite, which begins with preliminaries (7:30 a.m. MST) in the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and the 400 free relay followed by the evening finals session (3:30 p.m. MST).
