Max Majerle and Cohenj Gonzales combine for 43 points as No. 8 Men’s Basketball beats Dallas College Eastfield to open Fall Classic

Tucson, AZ –The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (3-0) opened play in the Aztec Fall Classic on Thursday as it faced off against Dallas College Eastfield at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

The No. 8 ranked Aztecs led for the entire contest and went on to beat the Harvester Bees 108-82.

The Aztecs maintained a single digit lead for much of the first half. Up 35-31, sophomore Cohenj Gonzales (Mesquite HS) drained a three-pointer, and it sparked a 13-5 run to close out the half as Pima took a 48-36 lead into the locker room.

The Aztecs continued the run in the third quarter as they scored the first six points to go up 54-36. Sophomore Wes Ball’s (Marana HS) basket made it 56-37 but Eastfield countered with an 11-0 run to put Pima’s lead back to single digits at 56-48. It didn’t last long as the Aztecs came back with a 7-0 run to make it 63-48.

Sophomore Kota Benson’s (Mesa HS) three-pointer gave Pima their biggest lead of the game at 29 points when the score was 101-72 with two minutes left. The Aztecs outscored the Harvester Bees 60-46 in the second half.

Sophomore Max Majerle (Arcadia HS) scored a team-high 22 points as he went 8 for 13 from the field and had seven assists and two steals. Gonzales finished with 21 points, five assists and four steals.

Sophomore Gabe Oldham went 6 for 8 from the field with 13 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Benson added 12 points as he went 3 for 5 from the field and had four assists.

Pima’s bench scored 34 points and were led by freshman Mason Hunt (Bradshaw Mountain HS), who had 13 points as he went 7 for 8 from the free throw line. Freshman Isaac Johnson had nine points and seven rebounds.

The Aztecs will be right back on the court on Friday when they play Wenatchee Valley College in the second day of the Aztec Fall Classic. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
