Mason Hunt and Khalon Johnson combine for 35 points off the bench as Men’s Basketball dominates Phoenix College

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s basketball team scored in triple digits once again as it opened ACCAC conference play on Wednesday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

The No. 8 ranked Aztecs defeated Phoenix College 113-59 as the Aztecs have started the season at 6-0.

The Aztecs led 16-10 with 11:17 left in the first half and then found their rhythm. Sophomore Kota Benson (Mesa HS) scored a basket and fellow sophomore Max Majerle (Arcadia HS) drained a three-pointer forcing the Bears to call timeout. The spark on offense turned into a 20-6 lead capped off by freshman Mason Hunt’s (Bradshaw Mountain) score to make it 36-16. The Aztecs led 49-21 at halftime.

The Aztecs opened the second half with a 19-6 run in the first five minutes to take a 68-27 advantage. The Aztecs outscored the Bears 64-38 in the second half.

Hunt scored 17 of his 21 points in the first half off the bench. He went 7 for 10 from the field and also had five rebounds and four steals.

Majerle closed out the game going 7 for 12 from the field with 20 points. He also added four rebounds, three rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

Freshman Khalon Johnson (Eduprize Charter) was big off the bench as well going for 14 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Wes Ball (Marana HS) closed it out with 11 points and four rebounds.

Sophomore Gabe Oldham had 10 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks as he shot 5-7 from the field. Sophomore Kota Benson (Mesa HS) posted eight points, five rebounds and six assists.

The Aztecs will play at Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Saturday in an ACCAC conference contest. Tipoff is at 2:00 p.m.
