(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (4-1, 1-0 in ACCAC) pick up a win in its ACCAC conference opener on Wednesday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.
The No. 10 ranked Aztecs held off a late surge from the Bears (4-4, 0-1) in their 74-65 win.
The Aztecs outscored Phoenix College 26-13 in the third quarter to take a 62-46 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Aztecs took their biggest lead of the game after a basket from freshman Kiley Sours-Miller made it 69-48 with three minutes gone by. The Bears closed out the game outscoring the Aztecs 17-5 and holding them to 12 points for the final quarter.
Pima had a 10-0 run in the opening minutes of the first quarter, but the Bears hung around as the Aztecs led 19-18 heading into the second quarter. There were nine lead changes in the first half as Pima clinged to a 36-33 lead at the break.
Sours-Miller finished with a team-high 22 points after going 11 for 16 from the field. She also grabbed seven rebounds.
Sophomore Rori Hoffmeyer (Cibola HS) fell short of a double-double as she finished with 13 of her 17 points in the second half along with eight rebounds.
Freshman Melicia Nelson (Window Rock HS) had six points, 11 rebounds and eight assists while sophomore Mattanaya Vital (Amphitheater HS), and freshmen Kennedi Niemann and Lucy Land each had six points. Sophomore Annalise Holthaus (Ironwood Ridge HS) added five points and six rebounds.
The Aztecs will hit the road for the first time in conference play on Saturday at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
