Castaneda and Pickett each have a goal and an assist as Men’s Soccer earns eighth shutout win

(Paradise Valley, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s soccer team (11-1, 10-1 in ACCAC) played a morning match on Saturday as it visited Paradise Valley Community College (4-5-2) in Phoenix.

The No. 4 ranked Aztecs picked up their fourth straight shutout victory (eighth overall) as they beat the Pumas 4-0. It was their second shutout win over the Pumas as they beat them 5-0 on Aug. 31 at the West Campus Aztec Field.

Freshman Robert Castaneda (Nogales HS) put the Aztecs on the scoreboard with his shot in the 5th minute. It was assisted by sophomore D’Andre Pickett (Tucson Magnet HS).

Pickett, a defender, got into the offensive action as he put the Aztecs up 2-0 with his goal in the 9th minute.

Freshman Jay Hogan scored a goal in his fourth straight game as he put one behind the net in the 42nd minute.

Castaneda helped provide insurance as he assisted in sophomore Ismael Ruiz’s goal in the early minutes of the second half.

The Aztecs finished with 10 shots on goal and held the Pumas without a shot in the second half. Sophomore Jose Carlos Ortiz (Barca Academy) finished the game with three saves.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Field on Tuesday when they host Mesa Community College. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
