Bentz Breaks 50 Free Record; ASU Men Ahead of Wolfpack after Day 1 in Raleigh

Ilya Kharun breaks NC State’s pool record, Bentz breaks 16-year 50 free record.

(Raleigh, NC)  On the first day of competition against N.C. State in Raleigh, Sun Devil Swim and Dive battled with the NC State Wolfpack as the men’s team has a 10-point lead heading into Saturday, while graduate Caroline Bentz became part of two school records Friday night.

Caroline Bentz continues to shine as a Sun Devil, In the first race of the day she anchored the 200 medley relay and swam the 50 free in 21.66 which help set the school record in the relay with a time of 1:36.17. The Virginia Tech transfer would then set a new 50 free school record, winning the race in 21.88 and breaking a 16-year-old record set in 2008 by Caitlin Andrew.

Ilya Kharun won the 200 fly convincingly by more than five seconds, setting an NC state pool record finishing in 1:38.74. He later would help win the 400 free relay, swimming a 41.56 split to cap off Friday night.

Patrick Sammon was victorious in the 200 free, winning in 1:32.63, while Andy Dobrzanski won the 100 breast in 52.26.

The ASU women went 1-2 in the 500 free, with Deniz Ertan winning the race in 4:40.19 and Alexa Reynacoming in second in 4:41.40.

The dual will continue at 7 a.m. AZT/10 a.m. AZT tomorrow and can be seen on ACC Network Extra on ESPN+.

Diving Results:

Kayden Hayes was the top Sun Devil finishing in 3rd in the 3m diving with a score of 261.00, just 3 points shy of her career best.

Lane Stallworth won the 3m diving event with a score of 306.53, being the only diver in the event to eclipse 300 points.

Event-by-Event Breakdown:

200 Medley Relay:

The quartet of Sheehan–Adame–Ullmann–Bentz set the school record for the second time this month, finishing in 1:36.17 in second place.

The ASU men stormed out into a fast start, coming from behind anchored by the duo of Ilya Kharun and Jonny Kulow to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:22.40.

500 Freestyle

The Sun Devil women placed first and second in the race. Leading the way was Deniz Ertan finishing in 4:40.19 and Alexa Reyna coming in 2nd at 4:41.40

On the men’s side, Daniel Matheson placed 2nd with a time of 4:17.23, as Michael Hochwalt was 4th, respectively.

100 Breast

ASU’s Emma Gehlert came in second in the event with a time of 1:00.84, the top Sun Devil in the event.

For the men senior Andy Dobrzanski came in first with a time of 52.26, setting a season best that was previously set on Oct. 4 in the season opener against UNLV. Then, the freshman from France, Lucien Vergnes placed third with a time of 53.17.

100 Back

Mirham Sheehan was the lead Sun Devil in the event placing third with a time of 52.78. Then behind her was Ella Guilfoil at 53.75 in fourth.

For the men, Jack Wadsworth was 2nd finishing in 46.63 setting a new season best.

200 Free

Elli Straume was the top Sun Devil in the event finishing in 1:48.15.

For the men’s side, Patrick Sammon came in first with a time of 1:32.63, then Olympian Tiago Behar placed 3rd for the Sun Devils at 1:33.50

50 Free

Caroline Bentz set the school record in the 50 free, becoming the first Sun Devil to swim the race in sub-22 seconds and winning the race in 21.88.

Jonny Kulow set a new season best breaking the sub-19 mark, finishing in second at 18.95. Tommy Palmerwas in 4th at 19.37.

200 IM

Senior Charli Brown was the lead Sun Devil in the event, finishing third with a time of 1:59.21.

Cale Martter placed second for the Sun Devils finishing in 1:45.91, then the Frenchman Lucien Vergneswas third coming in at 1:46.55.

200 Fly

Deniz Ertan and Sonia Vaishnani came in second and third in the race, with Ertan finishing in 1:57.06 and Vaishnani following her with a time of 1:58.12, respectively.

Kharun had his best 200 fly swim of the season by finishing five seconds ahead of his teammate Filip Senc-Samardzic, setting the NC State pool record of 1:38.74. Senc-Samardzic was second finishing in 1:43.86.

400 Free Relay

The ASU quartet of Bentz-Straume–Ullmann–Milligan placed second in the race in 3:15.73.

For the men, Kharun helped the team get off to a fast start putting Sammon, Senc-Samardzic and Kulow in prime position to win the relay, finishing in 2:46.58 helping by an anchor leg of 41.27 by Kulow to come in first. The ASU B quartet of Behar–Palmer–Seider–Roden came in 3rd with a time of 2:50.85.
