Aztecs Women’s Soccer produces six goal scorers in shutout win over Mesa CC

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College women’s soccer team (9-2) spread the wealth around as it produced a third straight shutout victory on Tuesday against Mesa Community College (5-7, 5-6).

The No. 9 ranked Aztecs beat the Thunderbirds 6-0 as they have outscored Mesa 13-0 in their two meetings this season. The Aztecs have won their last three games by a combined score of 17-0. It was also Pima’s seventh shutout victory overall this season.

Freshman Samantha Mendez (Tucson Magnet HS) had a goal and an assist. She set up freshman Kristal Navarro (Tucson Magnet HS) for her goal in the 7th minute and found the back of the net herself in the 29th minute to make it 2-0.

Freshman Marissa Garate (Tucson Magnet HS) made it 5-0 with her goal in the 70th minute that was assisted by freshman Yatana Acosta (Tucson Magnet HS). Garate provided the assist in sophomore Lizzie Walker’s (Canyon del Oro HS) goal in the 73rd minute.

Freshman Dameris Canto-Parker (Sahuaro HS) helped the Aztecs close out a strong first half with her goal in the 35th minute. Sophomore Jessica Alvarez (Tucson Magnet HS) had the assist as Pima went up 3-0 at the break.

Sophomore Ariela Sanchez-Hermosillo (Sahuaro HS) continued the momentum as she hit a shot from 35 yards out for the goal in the 67th minute to make it 4-0.

The Aztecs finished with 16 shots on goal. The Aztecs’ defense held the Thunderbirds to two shots on goal.

Freshman Phoebe Knisley Canyon del Oro HS) played the first half and finished with no saves. Freshman Brooke Valencia (Sabino HS) played the second half and had two saves.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Field on Saturday when they host GateWay Community College at 8:00 p.m. The Aztecs will honor their 13 sophomores before the game.
