Weatherbie has 45 assists and four aces as Volleyball halts rally to beat Chandler-Gilbert CC

(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College volleyball team (10-8, 7-2 in ACCAC) got back to ACCAC Division II conference play on Wednesday as it hosted Chandler-Gilbert Community College (8-7, 4-5) at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

The Aztecs won the first two sets and closed out the match in four, winning 25-16, 25-18, 18-25, 25-20.

With the score tied early in the first set at 3-3, the Aztecs secured 11 of the next 13 points. Freshman Addy Fisher (Queen Creek HS) capped off the run with two straight aces to make it 14-5. Pima took their biggest lead of the set when freshman Julia Baird had a block at the net to make it 17-6. The Aztecs went up 1-0 in the match.

The Aztecs carried the momentum into the second set as they scored five straight points. Sophomore Kenna Simon had a kill, freshman Maggie McReynolds (Mountain View HS) put down an ace and had a kill. Freshman Julia Weatherbie’s (Mountain View HS) kill made it 9-5 and the Aztecs never relinquished the lead. Pima held their biggest advantage at 23-16 and went up 2-0.

The Aztecs gained the first point in the third set, but the Coyotes took the lead and maintained it for the rest of the set. Down 23-13, the Aztecs made it interesting by cutting the deficit in half with five straight points, but the Coyotes got the final two points to win the set. The Aztecs remained ahead 2-1.

The Aztecs held a slim lead for much of the fourth set. Pima led 19-16 but the Coyotes cut it to one point at 19-18. McReynolds had a kill and followed that with an ace. Then sophomore Haylee Gilleland (Flagstaff HS) put down two straight kills as the Aztecs created some breathing room with a 23-18 lead. They closed out the match four points later.

finished with 45 assists to go along with four aces, three kills and one block. Gilleland closed out the match with 19 kills, two blocks and one ace while McReynolds posted 11 kills and four aces. Sophomore Kenna Simon had nine kills and one block.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Wednesday, Oct. 2 when they take on South Mountain Community College. The match is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
