Missael Montilla ties the game, but #4 Men’s Soccer drops first game at #2 Phoenix College

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s soccer team suffered its first blemish of the season on Saturday as it played an ACCAC conference match at Phoenix College on Saturday in a face-off between two NJCAA Division II nationally ranked programs.

The No. 4 ranked Aztecs fell to No. 2 Phoenix College 2-1 in their first meeting this season.

The Bears got on the board first with a goal from Clifton Branch in the 29th minute. The Bears held a 1-0 advantage at halftime.

The Aztecs tied the game at 1-1 when sophomore Ismael Ruiz (Tucson Magnet HS) found the back of the net in the 53rd minute with an assist from fellow sophomore Nico Valenzuela (Salpointe Catholic HS).

The Bears took the lead for good when Michael Watkins scored in the 71st minute.

The Aztecs finished with 10 shots on goal as the Bears finished with nine. Sophomore Jose Carlos Ortiz (Barca Academy) closed out the game with three saves.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Aztec Field on Tuesday when they go up against Scottsdale Community College. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
