(Surprise, AZ) The Park University Gilbert men’s soccer team (3-2-0, 1-0-0) ended its first in-conference match, as members of the Great Southwest Athletic Conference, with a 2-1 victory against the Ottawa University of America (3-1-1, 0-1-0) Thursday evening on the road.
In a sudden turn of events, the Buccaneers left Spirit Field with a win in the final seconds of the match. Midfielder Havard Brynie scored his third goal of the season late in the 89th minute, with midfielder Simon Scheucher assisting on the play.
Throughout this evenly fought match, Park-Gilbert and OUAZ took advantage of their scoring opportunities. Both teams converted at least 25% of their shots on goal into a score. The Bucs had 11 shots with 6 on goal, while the Spirit took 8 shots with 4 on goal.
The Buccaneers took the early 1-0 advantage when forward Konstantinos Hinteregger netted the first goal of the night, and his first of the year, in the eighth minute of action. However, they couldn’t hold onto the lead entering the halftime break as OUAZ forward Jamaine Turner tied things up at 1-1 with a goal in the 32nd minute.
Nine of Park-Gilbert’s 11 shots on the night, including four of their shots on goal came in the second half. Both teams maintained solid possession and played through the final 45 minutes, of what appeared to be a 1-1 draw for both teams. Brynie then sealed the deal with 29 seconds on the clock for the Buccaneers, who have rattled off three straight wins after starting 0-2-0.
The Park University Gilbert men’s soccer team returns to the pitch Thursday night, Sept. 19 at 8:00 p.m. MST, with another in-conference bout on the road at Arizona Christian University in Glendale, Ariz.
