(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College men’s soccer team (9-1) played its first non-conference match of the season on Thursday against the College of Southern Nevada (2-6) at the West Campus Aztec Field.
The No. 4 ranked Aztecs earned their sixth shutout victory of the season as they toppled the Coyotes 8-0. The College of Southern Nevada is playing in their first year as part of the ACCAC Division I Conference.
Sophomore Frank Castro (Prescott HS) set the tone of the game as he hit a shot from 35-yards out for the score in the 1st minute (54 seconds in the game).
Sophomore Ismael Ruiz (Tucson Magnet HS) netted two goals in the game. His first goal made it 3-0 as he got the assist from fellow sophomore Jose Luis Martin Montealegre in the 19th minute. Ruiz added more insurance with his second goal in the 55th minute to make it 6-0 as sophomore Brandon Sanchez (Canyon del Oro HS) was credited with the assist.
Montealegre scored in the 17th minute to put the score at 2-0. Sophomore Jacob Lund-Iversen and freshman Robert Castaneda (Nogales HS) also each had a goal and an assist. Lund-Iversen assisted in Montealegre’s goal and scored his in the 40th minute to make it 4-0. Castaneda provided the assist and scored seven minutes later to put it at 5-0.
Freshman Florian Traebert had two assists as he set up Jay Hogan for his goal in the 74th minute and Jihoon Song for his score in the 78th.
The Aztecs finished with 21 shots on goal while the Coyotes were held to four shots on goal. Sophomore Jose Carlos Ortiz (Barca Academy) closed out the match with four saves.
The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Field on Tuesday when they host Chandler-Gilbert Community College in ACCAC Division II conference action. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
