Defense Drives #16 Volleyball to Win at San Diego

(San Diego, CA)  Three earned double-digit digs as No. 16 Sun Devil Volleyball got another road win, taking the match at San Diego in four sets (25-14, 21-25, 25-17, 25-21) at Jenny Craig Pavilion on Saturday night.

Notable Stats

  • Arizona State (5-0) dropped a set against San Diego (0-4), but ASU won the last two sets to take the match. ASU is 2-0 so far in the Jack Talmadge Volleyball Classic.
  • Graduate libero Mary Shroll had a match-high 24 digs, her second match in a row with 20-plus digs. She has reached double figures in every match this season so far. She also added three aces, a new season high.
  • Graduate outside hitter Shania Cromartie notched her first double-double of the year and 17th of her career, leading all players with 13 kills and adding 14 digs. This is her first double-double as a Sun Devil.
  • Graduate middle blocker Claire Jeter collected eight kills and a match-high six blocks. She moved into sixth place in the ASU record books for career blocks with 360 while she has been a Sun Devil. She also moved into fifth for career block assists with 301.
  • Another Sun Devil in double figures was junior Bailey Miller with 11. She also had three blocks.
  • At setter, graduate Argentina Ung primarily handled the duties, earning 32 assists and adding a career-high four aces, five kills and eight digs. Redshirt-freshman Brynn Covell set some in addition to her defensive specialist duties, earning five assists and six digs.
  • Earning a season-high 13 digs, senior Geli Cyr also had nine kills.
  • Freshman defensive specialist Piper Rama made her collegiate debut in the third set of the match to serve. She notched one ace.


Set One: ASU 25, USD 14

Following some back and forth to start the match, the Sun Devils pulled away with a 6-0 run with an ace from Ung and a kill and block from Miller, making it 13-6. A run of four for ASU made it 21-12 after another Sun Devil block and an ace from Shroll. A kill from Jeter finished the set, 25-14.

Set Two: USD 25, ASU 21

The home team responded in the second set. The Toreros took an early 4-2 after three-straight Sun Devil errors. The set was tied at 11-11 following three in a row from ASU, but a 5-0 run from USD later pushed its lead back up to 18-13. Neither team put together more than two points at a time, allowing San Diego to hold on to the 25-21 win and tie the match.

Set Three: ASU 25, USD 17

Arizona State came out with fire in the third set, jumping out to a 5-1 lead and Cromartie notching two kills and a block in that span. However, San Diego responded by taking the 7-6 lead with a 5-0 run. After some back and forth, Cyr served ASU to five-straight points with two kills from Ung to make it 14-10. A few more runs extended the Sun Devil lead, including two-straight kills from Cyr to get to set point at 24-16. An error from the Toreros won the set, 25-17.
